Hi has anyone been treated for a drug resisitant bacteria with chloramphenicol. Its an older IV abx, but apparently quite good.

but has serious side effects...

all the regular Iv abx that should work against my bacteria, dont seem to help much. I would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has used it, and was it helpful? and for which bacteria?

and also Tigecycline, has anyone used it?

thank you

I have bordetella hinzii/avium.... culture reports say its sensitive to both drugs....but also says its sensitive to other drugs too, with less serious side effects....but they dont seem to help....

my dr. says lets not use everything and then we ll have nothing left....but we ve been doing that for 2.5 yrs

I just want to know if other people have used tygacil and or chloramphenicol and for what bacteria and did it help...

I thot chlor...was only in IV but I see on net it is also oral....it kills most bacteria but in rare cases can kill bone marrow...

(theres not too many people who have this bacteria, and my dr. has called many clinics and the few Drs who have patients with it, its doesnt seem to cause illness for them....)

I'm currently on Tygecycline for mycobacterium abscesses. I started it in late August, so I've been on it for about eight weeks. My health has gotten worse while on it, but I'm not really blaming the drug itself. My health was already declining when I went onto it.

For me, the worst side effect of Tygecycline is the nausea. It's not a constant, but comes and goes. I've also had really bad swelling of my ankles and lower legs. I'm also on Cefoxitin by IV pump as well as many oral antibiotics, which sometimes makes it hard to know where the side effects are coming from.

In terms of effectiveness, I think our bugs are very individual and the treatment plan must also be individual. This is especially true if you have a rare bug. I was originally put on Amikacin because we hadn't gotten insurance approval for Tygecycline. Although they thought Amikacin wouldn't work very well for me, it was quite effective. My CF doctor works with a doctor who is a MAC specialist to decide which combination of drugs to put me on.

If something isn't working, I would ask your doctor what other options are available. Two-and-a-half years is a long time to wait to feel better. I hope they can find something to help you.

Just because your culture is resistant to something or sensitive to something in a lab test doesn't mean it will work the same way in your body. My cultures are Cipro resistant on a lab tray but after a more recent course of Cipro being resistant to it in the lab still worked for me. However it is hard to get doctors to try something else they like to go off what they know. But just food for thought. I don't know much about these particular bugs/drugs. I wish you the best of luck though.

I have used Tygacil in the past. I never had any problems with it, but it just started to look like it wasn't having any substantial effect on my bacteria. (Achromobacter) There was some nausea, but easily manageable- just ask your docter for some Zofran.

My 13 y/o was on Tygacil a couple of times - last course was for 11 months for NTM Abcesses - They played around with the dosage as 2x per day caused significant nausea - they backed it down to 1x per day which we gave at night with PHinigaran (sp) and then used Zofran in the morning - THe drug has seemed to work as his cultures have been negative and bronch showed minimal colonies of NTM - He is on maint. with inhaled Amakacin and oral antibiotics as well.
