When i went in the hospital in jan i couldn't breathe very good, but i didn't have a fever at all ,but the 2nd night after getting started on meropenum and ceftaz i ran a fever 101 to 102 and hurt so bad i couldnt sleep .Took a lot of tylenol which didn't help the liver thing . I kept telling the attending doc that something was wrong that i was hurting all over and wasn't doing that before i got there. But he said that was from the exerbation i think was the word he used. I went thru 2 1/2 weeks of this went home after 3 days in the hospital. Went to clinic 1 month later after iv's and cf doc i usually see did bloodwork and said my liver enzymes were very high and that's why i felt so bad. And not to take tylenol and that's what the hospital doc told me to take. She said i couldn't use the meropenum again or it would damage my liver. The doctor at the hospital did not listen to me at all. If i have to go back in i will not see him i'll throw a big fit. The meropenum or the ceftaz i don't know which really messed up my stomach i have acid reflux twice as bad as i had it before. I couldn't use them without eating first or i would get throw up .But then when i did i couldn't use the vest b/c the stuff would come back up my throat and choke me. It took about 3 months to get back to where i could go anywhere. And i was working full time and taking care of the house and a teenaged daughter before i went in the hospital. I don't what went on but they were taking my blood in the hospital you'd think they would be alarmed about the liver enzymes being high. If your child or you as an adult with cf knows something isn't right make them listen to you sometimes the side effects don't outweigh the treatment. Hope this helps someone .

My daughter's liver enzymes always elevate when she's on IVs, though she's never been on meropenum. I will keep note of that med though, because it would probably not be a good one for her.

Our CF doc told us from early on that she could not have Tylenol. Ever. Once she when was inpatient the surgeon tried to give her tylenol with codeine for pain and I had to refuse it and ask the CF doctor to put in her chart no tylenol. It is definitely something I have to watch, because if you don't stick up for yourself with the doctors and nurses who don't know the big picture, you can really do harm.

I hope your liver enzymes come back down. My daughter's always have.
