Anyone have MAC bacteria?

I was just curious if there is anyone else in here that has had Mycobacterium Avium bacteria cultured in their sputum? They found it in mine about 2 years ago, and since then, I have gone to see an Infectious Disease specialist, who started me on Avelox, Ethambutol, and Clarithromycin, all of which I could not tolerate because they upset my stomach so badly, among other things. I went off of those after talking to the doctor. He said that MAC doesn't seem to be damaging my lungs right now, so there really isn't a need to aggressively treat it. Meanwhile, we find out that my brother, who I only see at holidays because he is at college, has it in his lungs. When this happened, our doctor said that it is an increasingly common bacteria in the lungs of CF adults. Basically, I was just wondering how common it is, and if anyone else has it. Thanks

Hi Marisa,

I have Mycobacterium Abbesses .. My regular clinic is in New York City, but i went to Denver National Jewish for their input since they specialize in infectious disease..

I have a lot of underlying probs so we knew this treatment wouldn't be easy. I cultured pos a little less than a year before starting treatment for it and that was why we held off cause of my probs.

Anyway it hasn't been easy but i am doing the best i can.. This has been going on since Feb. and i will have a CT scan soon to see where i stand..

I am on oral Clarithromycin , Inhaled Amikasin, IV Cefoxitin..

I am glad to hear you are getting a break (hopefully for a long, long time) from treatment.. and am sorry your bro cultured it too..

If you have any questions or want to talk PM me ..

Take care, keep us posted & God Bless you and your bro..

my late husband cultured MAC in 2007. he saw 2 different infectious disease specialists and he was on oral clarithromycin, and oral ethambutol. they also had him on rifampin at one point and trecator at another. the docs said that the MAC certainly wasn't going to pose any serious threat to him, it would just further complicate things if he got sick. they were planning on treating him for 18 months and this month would have been his last month of treatment.
