Anyone know about private full time disability??

Hi all, I am new to this forum. I am a 37 year old single female CF'er. I have been working from the age of 15 (full time). I have no family members to help me out if I become sick or disabled. I own a house for 5 years and I worry about what will happen to me if I can't work anymore. How will I pay my bills? My company does not know I have CF and I can't raise suspicion by asking about the disability program. I have asked in the past and the HR person did not give me details. She just looked at me and said "why are you asking?" so I left the office. What I want to know is---if I were to go out on disability how long would it last? I know that I have short term disability that lasts for 8 weeks (full pay) and then long term kicks in 67% but I dont know how long that lasts? Also, do you get your health benefits for free or do you have to pay Cobra? Has anyone on the forum gone through this?? I can't even imagine getting Social Security---which I heard takes awhile to get. I would survive a month on Social Security.

My only suggestion is to find out who your long term disability is through at work (meaning what company like MetLife etc...) and ask them about it if you don't want to talk to HR. They will probably have a website you can go to and look up info. Otherwise each plan is different according to what the employer wants to pay for, from my understanding.

Are you thinking of stopping work completely or only taking a few months off? That will make a difference too I think if you are going to return to work there or not.

LightNLife was on disability for a year while she got her health back up so she might be someone to talk to.

Thanks for the reply. I am not sure if it would be forever or just a year. What I am worried about is losing my home that I worked soooo hard for and ending up having to ask my friends for help..which I can't even think about. I just want to be able to take care of myself.

I suggest you contact Beth Sufian. She is an attorney assisting folks with disability issues that have CF. She herself has CF.

If you do a google search, her contact info. will pop up.
