Anyone use a food dehydrator to make your own snacks?

I am thinking of buying a food dehydrator to make my own fruit snacks and things. I have changed a few things in my diet recently and i am no longer eating cookies, cakes, chocolate covered granola bars, etc. But last night i was thinking i really miss my fruit snacks, and thought i could probably make my own that would be 100% fruit and nothing else. Theres probably so many things i can do with it and i am wondering if anyone else has used this and how well it worked for you.

Hi Diane

I do not recommend eating dried fruits. Dried fruits can contribute to yeast (fungus) within the body. Dried fruits in the stores usually have added sugar to enhance the taste. If you dry out your own fruits, they are not going to taste that great unless you add sugar and that is really bad for you.

It is better to eat fruit that is fresh to benefit from the natural enzymes and fiber. Once a fruit is dehydrated, it takes the body a long time to digest because it draws in water from the intestines. Dried fruits will contribute to diahrea and yeast. I am not sure what you are trying to do and what you will add to the fruit but do not waste your money.

In the morning, I ate oatmeal with one banana.

If you want to get rid of the fungus, do not eat a concentrated source of sugar is my suggestion.

Taking a Probiotic is very important!!!

My husband makes beef jerky with ours. I also have some recipes for stuff for backpacking, so I am going to try that out this summer <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

We got a jerky gun -- looks like a caulking gun and seasonings and have made hamburger jerky, which is really tasty. But mainly we use it for drying apples -- making apple chips.

When we first got the dehydrator, I bought a recipe book -- tried fruit roll ups, dried apples sprinkled with dried jello and cinnamon. Sticky, icky mess with the first two. But to this day, when we have a ton of apples from our trees, I slice up apples and dry the heck out of them. Realy tasty, but if you have too many -- look out intestinal tract.

When I used to have mint, I did dry mint leaves, but seemed to take a heck of a long time, and I don't use that much mint -- 1 tsp a couple times a year when I make a bulgar wheat salad.

I love dried apricots, craisins & berries, but as mentioned above -- causes nasty yeasties.

I can't comment about the fungus issue, but I've used a dehydrater for years. I don't make anything too complicated. I cut bananas in half or quarters and dry them til they are chewy. Also pieces of watermelon and cantaloupe. We don't eat a lot because it's so sweet. My kids also love fruit rolls. I make it with unsweetened applesauce with or w/o cinnamon. Sometimes I add drained pureed apricots or peaches to the applesauce. My dehydrater has special sheets to make the fruit rolls on.
