Approved For SSDI

Hey Guys,

I was finally approved for SSDI.. Thank you GOD!!! I have no other details except that I was approved, it went in as an emergency appeal because I was about to lose my health insurance. It took just a few short days to get approved after being denied twice over a year or mores time.

I know I get back pay, minus the first five months, and I know my lawyer who is getting 25 percent of the back pay, and she well deserves it.

How long do you get approved for? How long do you have to wait till the money comes. In general how long do you have to start the process over and recert for it again?

Thanks for any help..

Hi Jenn! Congrats on finally getting approved...I know you have had quite a battle getting through this process. I have been declared disabled since 2003, been getting SSDI payments since June 2004 (5 months after being declared disable by their definition). Usually, you get payments fairly quickly....They usually send a notification as to when to expect payment (opt for direct deposit, it is so much easier to deal with and you don't have to wait for a check in the mail) and they are usually pretty accurate as far as the date they specify. In my case, I filed for disability on March, was accepted in May and got my payments in June, but I did not have to appeal or deal with back pay so I am not sure when you should expect your full payment. I am sure others will chime in on that one, I am also sure that there will be variations as well.
As far as recerting goes, I have seen people who have had to go through it as early as 18 months (but that was for conditions where recovery is expected). Personally, they have been checking me every 3 years (they were late though, it was more like 4) where at 3 years, it is possible for recovery but not likely. Some people recert every 7 years, those people aren't likely to improve but they still need to be recerted (this is how a case worker explained all of this to me) The process of continuing disability is not as bad as the initial application process where they want every teeny bit of info from you and your grandmother. They ask for info on all hospitalizations, doctor appts, meds, etc for that year only, not the whole 3 years. If you see many specialists, are hospitalized frequently (I think I was in something like 4 times that year of recert LOL), it can be pretty involved but as long as you keep good records, pulling up those dates is a snap. That is one thing I can tell you, keep good records with dates, names, what happened etc.... You will need them in the future and it does make the recert process a whole lot easier.

I hope this helps....Hugs,

Congrats on being approved. I have had SSDI since 2003 I believe and have never had to recert. I recall them calling a year afterwards and had me fill out paperwork for a review and they sent the same paperwork to my dr for verification. But I haven't heard from them since. I agree with Jenn that direct deposit is the way to go, not only for your back pay, but for your monthly payments also. It makes life so much easier and accurate. My payments have never been late but I have heard that mailed check are late sometimes. Your back pay should be to you in no time. I dont remember how long it took for mine but it was less than a month. Good luck and congrats!!!

When I was approved my letter said I will be reviewed in 3 years as my condition has a possibility of getting better. I have been legally advised that as long as I continue an inhaled antibiotic regimen I will be recertified. Of course, right now I am doing a lot more than that...IVs every few months but my hope is with Vertex 770 around the corner (through open label due to my participation in Ph. 3) I hope to not need IVs as much or any more. We shall see. I am due for evaluation in 18 months.

I applied in July and was accepted in August. Payment actually started before I received the letter because I chose direct deposit and filled out the forms during application. Wise decision!

Congrats...sort of :-(

I have had ssdi for 2 years now. I never used a attorney and handled the whole process my self. Never had to go to court for it, it was approved immediatly by ss office. They never mentioned having to recert. As a matter of fact the letter says I will be receiving payments until I reach 65....like that will happen.

Your a rare and LUCKY breed minimedic304 <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

I have only heard of a handful of people with CF getting their case revaluated 3+ years down the road. That is for stuff that has the potential to improve and until a cure for CF is found, that's never going to happen. I wouldn't put any time into worrying or thinking about it. I'm so glad you finally got approved!!!
