Assistance in Florida

I was wondering if there are any CFers in Florida that are recieving some sort of assistance for their CF. My husband uses the CF pharmacy,
but we aren't sure where to go for additional assistance. He will be applying for disability soon. And we go next week to get evaluated for a tx.

Any suggestions, solutions, ideas are welcome.

I live in the tampa area, and there is an organization here called Vocational Rehabilitation. (im sure they are all over) If your husband wants to get some form of training to accomodate him in changing education/training to be able to work a more cf friendly job, they will supply funding to get him his training. They took care of 99% of my college funding. Aside from that, there are tons of programs and "freebies" offered to disabled people and cf people in florida. I would suggest asking any local social worker (voc rehab has tons of info also) and i'm sure they would be happy to let you know.

Here are a couple resources for adults with CF living in Florida.

1) This is a state specific program for uninsured individuals with CF who meet the income requirement. The link includes a phone number:

<a target=new class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.cff.org/living_with_cf/insurance_and_assistance_programs/adult_assistance_programs/index.cfm?state=FL">http://www.cff.org/living_with_cf/insurance_and_assistance_programs/adult_assistance_programs/index.cfm?state=FL</a>

2) If you meet the income levels for Medicaid, Florida has a pretty generous Home and Community Based Waiver program for adults that provides for quite comprehensive home based care. If you have access to a social worker through your CF care center, they should be able to help you.

This waiver program is specific to Florida ... every state's medicaid program varies greatly.

I get money taken out of my social security check each month for medicaid/medicare, and I have never used the damn stuff. I get collistin as a "special" perscription delivery every month from Aetna. They at first didn't want to do it, giving me trouble, so my mom (a high ranking human resources director for a large entertainment company) got on the phone to the very top guy, and had HIM call them. They immediately changed their tune and were more than happy to fill it. If I get on medicaid temporarily in transition between me working, im afraid they wont cover collistin. That's my big concern.

Yup, I also use Abilities. They'll also pay for the food you buy (as long as it's nutritious, up to $50 a month at least) and they'll pay for your monthly gym membership if you work out. They bought us a generator a few months ago for hurricane season, too!

Lynda, I don't know much about the florida information but it looks as thought you have recieved some great responses. I will say though, if you need any help at any point in the disability application, please feel free to contact me. I will have internet up and running at my house tomorrow (yeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaaaahhhhhh!). It can be a frustrating infuriating process and if you need some pointers, suggestions, even someone to vent to, please feel free to ask for assistance, I would be more than happy to help!
