attention problems

Hi - My 5 year old son with cf is in kindergarten. He is having problems paying attention and listening. He is a bit rammy. I was wondering if anyone has had an exper. like this and did they change to xopenex instead of albuterol? Did it help. He has been on alb. since he was a baby, so I wouldn't know any differnce. I know it could just be that he is a boy that is not interested in learning; however I don't want to ignore something if I could help him. Any info. would be appreciated. Thanks! Jo Ann

Well, it's most likley that he's just being an excited five-year-old. But the albuterol may have something to do with it too. I don't use it regularly, but when I do I get fidgity. Also, when I'm on lots of different meds, there are lots of little side effects that make class a bit tough, ringing in my ears, blurred vision, dry mouth, numbness in my fingers, not to mention pain in joints, coughing, ect. Was he in preschool at all? It could just be that he's learning to be in a class situation. Something else to think about, is he getting too much sugar in his diet? Debbie22 yr old w/ CF

He was in preschool and they noticed it a bit there also. He isn't getting too much sugar in his diet. I suppose it'll be a little trial and error. Thanks for your advice. Jo Ann

Hi,I substitute teach part time and have been in classrooms ranging from kindergarten to Seniors in High School... Helpful tip..... I have never been in a classroom with a five year old boy or girl who had an attention span of longer than 10 minutes. A normal 5 year old wants to play games, sleep, eat, have constant hugs, and ask "why?" about 5 million + times in an average day.The brief description that you give of your 5 year old son makes me think that he is a perfectly normal boy. The only other advice I can give you is to talk with your son's teacher as well as other kindergarten teachers. It may even be helpful to seek the opinon of one or two child psychologists. I hope this helps,Good luck.Sean 26 year old with CF

Jo Ann,Hi is the albuterol in a neb or in an inhaler? My daughter is five and in preschool (didn't make the cut off for K) I have always noticed that she is much more hyper than the other kids in her class, but she is more social too. She is a lot more hyper when she is using the albuterol inhaler instead of the neb. We try to only do the neb before school now since she is so much more" active" after having the inhaler. Daddy also has ADHD and it is possible that our daughter does too, so some of her hyperactivity might just be due to her nature and not the albuterol.............. but the inhaler makes it worse.Andrea

Hi my name is Robbie Cooper and i am doing a project for school on CF. I was just wondering if someone could leave me some info on what life is like with CF, and what it is like to have a family member who has CF. It would help alot, thanx

Most kids w/ CF are really out going and social. I think it is because we have to interact w/ adults more often and have our bodies poked and probed and we naturally more intune w/ our bodies at such a young age. Debbie22 yr old w/ CF

Actually albuterol is a stimulant used to help the airways open up and get more air, if you notice that he is more hyper after a treatment that is why. Have him go run around the outside of the house a couple of times. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> Helped me. Anyway I've been on both albuterol and Xopenex and I noticed that immediately after changing a med, that it would get worse instead of better and then level out. Xopenex and albuterol I found had about the same affect on me. Although I could control it for the most part. But with him being a little boy it's probably a combination of meds/childhood. I found that with time my meds leveled out and I became less hyper as I got older.~Candice
