autogenic drainage

hey all...

so I've gone a ton of gunk and was trying autogenic drainage. I kept coughing either before I was done forcing all of my air out or just by breathing in to start forcing my air out. I've always been under the impression that that can make the AG less effective. What should I do to prevent coughing until I'm actually "supposed" to cough?

When I was doing autogenic (and it has been SEVERAL years, so take this with a grain of salt) I used to just stablize my breathing as much as possible by slowing down my breaths. I know as you force the air out this is more difficult. When I did cough too early, I would stop the cycle and start again.

My suggestion is do a few really good huffs before you start the AG to try and clear out some of the stuff that's really ready to move. If you have a vest or any other CPT device (or someone willing to do manual) it may be worth switching it up for a while, at least until you have some of the gunk cleared out.

I love autogenic drainage, I think it works wonders. BUT they way they taught it to me I could never 'not' cough. So I adapted it to my own way and it works wonderful. I breathe out only as far (not fast, not hard, just breathe out almost like a sigh) as normal and then push it just a little. Then I breathe normally, and work my way up to pushing out air of my lungs more and more. So its more gradual. AND I take some normal breaths in between to stabilize my urge for coughing. Also chewing gum helps. It kinda makes your brain say, okay no coughing i'm eating..'

Then when i can feel all the mucus in my upper chest (you can actually hear it rattle too) I take a sharp inhale and a fast hard exhale. IT just kinda pops up into the back of your mouth. And best part is, it really works its way from way down deep and its not as tiring as coughing. Hope that helps. I wish i could explain it better. IF you still have questions let me know.

good luck!!
