I went today to a Adult CF MD. He started me on Azithromycin 500mg three times a week.
Is anyone else doing this?

I'm doing this - same routine too. I've been on it now for about 5 months, and have noticed that my lungs are less inflammed. My breathing has also improved a bit.

So Azithromycin is an oral antibiotic? When we went to Minnesota, Dr Warwick had mentioned using this on his younger patients as well as a preventative antibiotic. I was hoping it was not inhaled b/c I hate to add another breathing treatment to my 2 year old's regimen. Are there any negative side effects such as diarrhea, loss of appetite etc?

Thanks, Megan

www.zithromax.com click on the package insert for side effects of the drug.

zithro is used to reduce inflammation as well as to interfere with PA colonies communicating. it doesn't kill PA but it helps PA not grow in such large #s.

many CF patients have been on it for years.

they're reachering inhaled azithro...but it's not being used yet.

Mare,

I have been using it for several years now. When I first started on it my FEV1 went up 5% over the first 3 or 4 months. I can't notice a big difference now but probably would if I quit taking it.

I was on zithro for a few years.  I stopped taking it because
I really didn't notice any difference.  Plus it made me have
more GI symptoms.  Not that I need that!  My PFT's
never got any better so I just quit taking it.  It is suppose
to help with inflammation over time though.   I'm glad it
works for some of you!

its also used to combate psuedo...it doesnt eradicate it but it prevents it from forming new colonies and getting worse.
