babies and coughing

Hello,I am writing this as I am desperate to get a opinion from anyone else about acceptable coughing. My baby is 10 months old and he has been reasonably well, however he is now crawling a lot and he has started coughing quite regularly since then. His doctors and nurse tell me that he shouldn't be coughing at all and they don't like babies to cough. What to do! I am a wreck because everytime he coughs they want me to take him to be checked! It isn't a wet cough and he does not have any symptons of a infection or a cold?He did culture staph last time we were at clinic and they put him on antiobiotics to eradicate this, and then he ended up getting a cold and having another course to be on the safe side.I have read however in information that it is good for them to cough because it helps move the mucus. What to do, I don't want to take any risks but need a realistic idea of what is good coughing and what is bad?Sorry I am really sounding like someone who doesn't have a clue here, but I need a bit of guidance. He is yet to have a chest infection.RebekahMother to Matt 10mths old<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

Hi - My first question would be where is it that he is crawling? Could it be allergy related now that he is down on the ground and motoring around? What type of cough is it - you say it isn't wet; is it dry, spasmatic, gag like...? How often and when is it that he is usu. coughing - morning, while sleeping, when he eats, when you do cpt, sporadic, all the time? Then I would ask how is his energy and how is he eating and sleeping? Also, has he tried any new foods or drinks lately? Have you had any painting or work done around your house lately? I know these are a lot of questions, but this is the only way I can ever figure out what is going on with my son. He wasn't diagnosed until he was 1 and 1/2. He is now six and we are pretty good at answering the above type questions to give us and the dr.s a good indication as to what might be happening. I hope some of this might be some help in figuring out what is going on. Take Care. Jo An

Hi,Yes he is crawling and the cough has begun once he started. He does also cough a bit more when he eats also. The cough is definately dry and sounds more like he is clearing his throat. When he isn't moving about the house and sitting still he generally doesn't cough at all.He does cough when we do CPT.Sorry a bit vague!I never thought I would be running around the house after him to check on his cough! Thanks so much for your advice!Rebekah

Hi - Maybe the cough has started because he has a sinus drip running down and because he is mobile or eating on when doing cpt and changing positions, it trigers a gag/cough type reflex. My son used to do that and to a certain extent still does to clear the thick drip. It sounds dry, not wet. If he doesn't seem sick, this might be an explanation and one you could discuss with your dr. Usually they can see by looking at their throat if there is a drip.Take Care!Jo Ann

Hi my son is 5 months old, and he coughs alot. The cf Doctor said he should not be coughing a all. They said it is a sign of infection in the lungs. So we just started antibotics. He still coughs alot, but its not waking him up at night. That was one of there main concerns also. Please keep in touch. I just found this web site, and its really nice to talk with people who have the same thing going on. Charlestown,InAARONUL401@aolThanks, Jamie

My son is six months old with cf. He has been coughing since birth. His CF doctor also said that he should not be coughing. He has been on antibotics a few times. He also recently had an infant pft test that showed his lungs did not have inflammation or mucus build-up. I asked on cf yahoo parents about what could be causing his cough. A few parents wrote back saying it could be reflux related. I mentioned this to the GI doctor a few weeks ago. We switched Jack from over the counter Zantac to Prevacid. Two weeks later his cough is 90% better!!! What a blessing. This is not the first time parents have been more helpful than the doctors!!Sharon, mom to Sophia, 2 and Jack, 6 months both with cf

Hi everyone, thanks for your response.Well I took Matthew back to the doctor for a throat swab to see if Staph was irritating him again only to be told a few days later that he had tested positive to Pseudomonas!I freaked out, I thought I was doing the best I could to prevent this but it hasn't worked. He isn't unwell no cough now and is eating and playing as if nothing is wrong? The doctors at the hospital are completely baffled by him.He has started on IV tobi and a few others to try and eradicate it, and try and keep it away for as long as possible.I am devastated as he is only 11 months old. They say that it is very positive because he is so well that they should be eradicated with the Tobi. Will keep you updated as to how we go, thanks all for you advice.RebekahMother to Matt 11mths CF

Rebekah,Oh please don't despair! I know you must feel like you've done something wrong, but please don't feel that way. Pseudomonas and other bacterias are all over the place... in the water, soil and air... you can't escape them. It's good that it was caught, and he's getting treatment. With CF, remember that nothing is absolute and for sure. He may not grow it again for many years. Sometimes I do, and others I don't. I was diagnosed with it when I was in middle school and I really haven't had many problems from it. good luck,Debbie22 w/ CF

Hi all, I was just wondering if any of the kids who have been coughing or coughing when crawling have reflux? When My daughter was at the crawling age she HATED to be on her tummy or all fours because she would cough form her reflux! She ended up skipping the crawling thing entirely because she had not been diagnosed with CF or reflux yet and was not getty any meds for it. She pulled herself up and started walking.BTW don't feel too upset about the pseudomonas, Rachel cultured it from diagnosis at 9 months all the way through until this past October (she is 5) She doesn't culture it now.Andrea

Hi Everyone,Thanks so much for your advice and I do feel a lot better about it all now.I had read some misleading information and took it to seriously! He is doing well in hospital and is terrorizing all the nurses that try to come near him to give him his meds!Thank goodness for modern medicine!Rebekah Mother to Matt 11mths old
