DS was and is still a finicky eater. He had texture issues when it came to foods and would gag like he had a hairball. Our doctor told us to skip babyfood because it's low in fat & salt and just grind up what we're eating. Daycare did that, but we obviously didn't grind some stuff up fine enough cuz it was hit or miss.

DS hated rice cereal, but loved gerber oatmeal with pears or applesauce. Liked the orange food group -- sweet potatoes, sweet potato & corn, squash, carrots. Fruit he liked bananas, pears and something with pineapple in it - pineapple & orange. Loved green beans. Loved stage 2 chicken and turkey -- beef was a bit too thick. We'd add salt to it. You said no to dairy - we also fed him yogurt & gerber mac & cheese.

He would eat ground up canned stew, bean soup with bacon, chicken ala king & chicken & dumplings. Ground up lassagna or beefy macaroni. When we found something he liked -- we stuck with it. Even if it meant jarred sweet potato & corn matter and turkey with every meal. I did end up throwing a LOT of stuff away until he figured out he actually liked something or we gave up -- he still hates peas.

Just wait til the toddler years where he can say things are icky and spit all over you. Liza

Ry made Ahava's baby food for her, citing several reasons: preservatives, food choices, nutrition, etc. The truth was he just spoiled the crap out of her lol.

That being said, there are some really good sides to making it at home. You can combine different things that he does like. Have you tried apples and chicken? Ahava loved that. You can also throw some veggies in with meat and stuff so he can't taste the veggies as much.

I actually have have some baby food recipes, if I can find them, if you'd like. Best of luck to you!

Allie,

I'd be interested in seeing the baby food recipies if you can dig them up. It's one of things mark and I are considering doing. If you have a chance to share, I for one know I'd love to see them.

Christi,

My mom made my baby food too. She got rid of the recipies years ago though and is trying to remember them but she's not having too much luck. I was a VERY picky eater (still am) so she would put in a large amount of items I did like, and then add some other things (I didn't like mean, but LOVED veggies). I really couldn't taste the meat so I ate it. Like waht allie suggested doing.

your all missing the one vital ingredient when making baby
food, fresh herbs. The wife makes all our babies food and uses
fresh herbs, parsley, basil and baby Craig really loves
corriander.
I'd be more than happy to get the recipes out, I kind of know where they are LOL. It was a separate kid cookbook he made. Anyone who'd like them email me at RyAllieAhava AT Yahoo.com

One of the first things DS ate in terms of real food was dill dip -- sour cream based veggie dip. We'd been to the doctor in the city who told us to start feeding him regular food. Went back to the hotel to chill and DS started feeding him spoonfuls of it, which he loved.

One of his favorite foods now is dill pickles -- have to be kosher dills, sandwich slabs, although last week, kosher half sour were his preferred pickle.

Hi Everyone,
I found that adding a little bit of vegie stock to the vegies made
a huge difference with Archie as he was a non vegie eater also.
He's also allergic to milk so custards etc are out of the question
at the moment. I found that Archie prefers vegies mixed with other
things so, I took a plunge and tried the baby food with meat
in them. I blended them up to remove some of the big lumps and
he loved them - typical boy loves his meat! So what I do now is buy
one of the baby foods with mixed vegies and meat and add it to my
own vegies.
Good luck with the solids x

My son, now 3, has been a picky eater from day-1; when he was starting to eat semi-solid foods he went through a spell of several months where eggs were his favorite food (usually omlettes, but also scrambled). When we were trying to get him to eat all those baby foods in jars I made it a practice to sample each of them myself and came to complete agreement with his aversion to all of them except the fruits.
