Hi,I'm 36 with cf and my back always hurts. I have all kinds of pain, like sharp, dull, moving, etc. through my back and shoulders and in my heart. I think it's because of the lung disease we have, even though we aren't sick at the time. I go to a chiropractor, a massage therapist and do easy yoga to try to stretch my muscles so my aches go away. Also, if you have a barrell chest, which is when your rib cage is slightly large and you may have poor posture, slumping forward of the shoulders, that causes major back pain too. Some cf's don't think they have a barrell chest, but most do.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Barrel chestedness is simply a side effect from having chronc lung disease. Not just cf'ers acquire it, folks with emphysema and other forms of COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) get barrel chests too. I don't know the physiology behind barrel chests, but I know that it happens to virtually anyone with the above mentioned ailments (sooner or later). -Wes

I actually had my barrel chest repaired through extensive corrective surgery. I couldn't get it done in the US do to "ethical" issues, but my doctors in Isreal were more than happy to fix the problem. Now my back pain is gone and I look somewhat normal when I take my shirt off.

I'm curious as to what those ethical issues might have been... care to elaborate? Secondly, don't you have a bunch of scars instead of the barrel chest? Thanks-

Hey there, We all have back pain and stuff. I find that hugging a pillow or big stuffed animal when I cough helps, so does some yoga in the morning and late afternoon (all you need is five minutes, and if you want to get into a longer routiene, the breathing techniques help move alot of stuff out). But I also like to soak in a hot bath with epsom salt in it. That helps with joint aches, too. Just remember to drink plenty of water (actually Gatoraid is better for us) that will help minimize muscle pains.

Back pain is one thing that almost every person in the world has. I don't know of the original posters actual degree of pain, but I have it too. I learned in my Anthropology class recently that the way our body is structured gives majority of us back pains. Almost all of our weight is from our head to our coccyx (I think), and it all just sits on this one tiny bone in our lower back. Poor posture can affect it too of course...there are soo many reasons for back pain. I actually noticed that in the summer time, when I don't live at my computer desk, I have less pain in my back. I like to attribute my pain to the poorly designed bone structure of human beings, my not so great posture, and my addiction with sitting at my computer...cuz honestly, how many of us sit perfectly straight while typing away or surfing the net...?

The chest pain though is def something you should tell your dr that you have. I always get random chest pains that I have always referred to as a "mini heart attack" but I never think much of them.
