Bacteria?

This is probably a dumb question but here it goes...

1.)Do Cfers always culture bacterias? (Our son almost 6 months is culturing two; they are not going to treat them at this time because they don't want to develop antibiotic resistance)

2.)Do bacterias they don't treat just go away or do they always culture them?

Thanks for any help, I plan to ask at his next visit but thought in the meantime I might get my answer here.

My daughter always cultures staph. She gets an occasional culture that doesn't have it, but its back the next time, so I'm guessing its still there but the throat culture just didn't get it. She's cultured other common but untreated things that doesn't usually pop back up.

I guess I don't know how to answer your question really. I was told that pseudomonas or a cepacia or other scary bacteria would get treatment regardless of symptoms, but pretty much everything else only gets treatment in an acute exacerbation (meaning its causing symptoms).

I'm not sure how I feel about the staph just sitting there chronically cultured in her lungs, but I do know that any abx attempts we have made to get rid of it doesn't seem to matter because it comes back within a few months.

Andrea,

I think that it is very common to culture somethings such as Staph or H. Influenza (?) when they are young. I know that my girls did, as well as what they call 'normal flora' (whatever on earth that is, I have no idea!)

My girls CF dr does not treat everything. Basically the ones mentioned above are not treated for unless there are symptoms showing a flare up. When they started culturing MRSA, it was not treated either unless there are symptoms.

Hannah was treated immediately for Psuedomonas and Kayla was treated immediately for B. Cepacia.

I am not sure about some of these things just going away. Sometimes the H. Influenza shows up, and sometimes it doesn't. Same with the Staph and MRSA. The Psuedomonas has come and gone about three times. The B. Cepacia-well that was her last clinic appt, and we haven't had a culture since then. My guess is it hasn't gone anywhere.

From my understanding, at that age they are only really getting the saliva in their mouth. I think you will find that many "normal" people would also be carrying staph and other bacterias in their mouth.
