Barium sulfate and CF

Have any of you heard of CF and Barium sulfate contradicting each other?

My three month old is scheduled for an upper GI next week and the above was brought to my attention. I have also found a link on MedlinePlus that says the risk of blockage in the small bowel is greater in CF patients who are given Barium sulfate.

</a>
Have any of you had problems with this? Is there an alternative?

Thanks!

DS had a study done when he was about 3 weeks old with barium. Basically put barium down an ng tube and then they watched it thru xrays of it going down into the stomach and thru the intestines. I believe when he was a day old he was also given a barium enema to determine if he had a blockage.

My DD (2 1/2 yrs old) just had a barium enema a few weeks ago. Several parents at another message board I sometimes visit said to avoid using barium. It apparently can cause constipation. These parents all mentioned using gastrografin instead. I talked to our GI about this concern and she then talked to the radiologist who would be doing the procedure. Our hospital no longer uses gastrografin, but they used something else . . . I have been trying to remember what it was called and I just cannot recall it . . . I believe it was something water soluble and started with a "c" . . . maybe someone else will know. In any event, I would at least talk to your CF doc and/or GI to see what their experience has been using barium and ask what alternatives are available to use.

Good luck.

I just had an experience with this as well.. For me, when I drank the barium contrast it bound me up even worse... It was stuck in my stomach for 7 days.. and it didn't move.......

The barrium really hurt my stomach and made me worse... I didn't know it was contraindicated for ppl with CF but you better believe I am going to let my GI doctor know.. tomorrow....

I had Gastrographen enema, which in the end reversed the effect of the barium that I drank....

I am not sure if this helped.. Just my experience

I know that I've used Barium once in the past for some kind of procedure when I was younger, and I don't remember having a reaction of any sort. Maybe its a small percentage of CFers that do?
