Big advancement in the fight against cystic fibrosis

This is going to be a huge step in the screening of future cf drugs similar to kalydeco. They grew lung tissue containing the G551D gene and showed that kalydeco was effective at correcting the genetic dysfunction. They also know that they can grow DF508 tissue as well. This will speed up the development of new drugs because so many more compounds tested will prove to be effective in human airways.

Hopefully someone on here can help me? When Kalydeco first came out and the media got wind of it, all of my family and friends were calling telling me about it. I was SO excited! When I took my daughter in to the CF clinic, they said it was only for one kind of mutation and Suzie does not have it. (She is Delta508 and the other has never been found). Someone on here said that the drug was only approved for ONE mutation but that it helps everyone and the reason why they are not saying that is because the state/government/insurance companies do NOT want to pay for it? Does anyone know if that is true? I only have one child and I love her to pieces. If something could help her, I want to know!

Sharon, 54. Married 36 yrs. Mother of Suzie, 22 with CF.

My family did the same thing when kalydeco came out. They kept calling to say that a cure for cystic fibrosis had been found. Like they would know something about it that I didn't. To answer your question, kalydeco was not approved for your daughters mutations as its only approved right now for people with the G551D gene. That being said, some people with DF508 have been successful getting their insurance to cover the drug and then its just a matter of getting a doctor to prescribe it for her. If she is in relatively good health and still has high lung function then I would probably just wait a few years for the next round of drugs to come out which can hopefully correct her mutation. I say this simply for the fact that the long-term effects of using kalydeco are still largely unknown. But if your daughter is 6 or older you can try getting a prescription for it and seeing if it helps. Different people with DF508 experienced different results from the drug in clinical trials.
