Birth Plans

Hi
Popping in to say hello and I have some questions for you all if you'd like to share. I won't judge anyone's personal wishes or question what they wanted for their birth, I just wanted to get a general overview of what your birth wishes were. Did you write an actual birth plan and give it to your docs or post it in your chart or room?
What if any unusal circumstances came up during your birth bc of you having Cf, or if you haven't yet given birth have your docs said something unusual will come up bc of your birth?
Any unusual things come up for non cf moms that you'd like to share?
If you've already had a baby(s), what would do over or do the next time now that you know what you didn't then?-Would you add something specific to your wishes, or do you now consider something you wanted then to be not than important now looking back?
Thanks!
Once I get some feedback, I think I'll post my plan if anyone is interested. I know I like reading others plans for general info. I have to give it to the doc this week so I'm typing it out tonight and making copies.

The formatting didnt stick with this but here is mine. I printed off copies of mine, took one copy to OB, put a couple in my hospital bag and then one I tied with ribbon to a nice fruit and chocolate basket that I made up for the staff that woudl be taking care of me. Kind of a nice 'in' with the nurses and will hopefully encourage reading it. We were giving birth at a very popular week (right before xmas they siad lots inductions due to getting it in before xmas for convenience and new year for taxes--who'd have thought? ) so it helps if they are super busy to be the 'nice couple that brought us goodies' IMO!

I went to alot of online places and I foudn one checklist I relaly liked, it had the sections, you clicked what you wanted and only that stayed then you could put into a document, I used the wording at top from another site.

My only caution is the doctor told me afterward that the more specific stuff you have in your birth plan the less likely your birth is to follow that plan. She siad it is murphy's law thing where it is something she notices over time that women who invest alot time and effort thinking how they want things to go it doesnt seem to--mine surely didnt. Just keep your mind open and all things will be fine. The only things that I absolutely wont compromise on is breastfeeding (I was still numb so my DH held DD to myh breast first tiem!) and no bottles or nipples of any kind for DD.

It is our desire to have a natural, medication- and intervention-free childbirth. We have educated ourselves and are prepared for the work involved. We understand that complications do arise and in such instances ask that the physician/midwife discuss with us any procedures or medications before administering them, whenever possible and explain the rationale behind the need for their use. We greatly appreciate your cooperation in realizing our plan.

Please do not offer any pain medications unless I ask for them.

Thank You

ENVIRONMENT
I would like the lights dimmed.
We would like to film and/or photograph in the delivery room.

FIRST-STAGE LABOR
If my water breaks at the onset of labor, I would prefer to wait at least 6 to 12 hours before inducing, if my and my baby's condition permits.
If I go past my estimated due date, I would prefer not to induce labor as long as the baby and I are fine.
If inducing or augmenting labor becomes necessary, I would like to try the following techniques
All non-drug options first such as: stripping or breaking of membranes, castor oil, breast stimulation, enema, walking.
I would like to eat and drink during labor.
If I need an IV, I would like to use a heparin or saline lock.
I'm interested in pain medication only if:
I request it. I do not want pain medication offered to me.
I would like to be free to walk and move around as I choose during labor.
As long as the baby and I are fine, I would like to be free of time limits and not have my labor augmented.

SECOND-STAGE LABOR
About episiotomies:
I would rather risk a tear than have an episiotomy.
I would like to view the birth using a mirror.
I would like to touch my baby's head as it crowns.
I do not want residents or students to be present during the birth.
As long as the baby and I are fine, I would like to be free of time limits on pushing.
If an assisted birth becomes medically necessary:
I would prefer vacuum extraction.

CESAREAN SECTIONS
I would like my partner to be present at all times during the operation.
I would like to be conscious.
I would like to have one hand free to touch the baby.
We would like to videotape and/or photograph the operation and baby coming out.
I would like to have immediate contact with the baby (if the baby is in good health).

POST-BIRTH
I would like to hold my baby immediately after birth.
I would like to postpone newborn procedures until I have had a chance to bond with my baby.
I would like all newborn procedures to take place in my presence.
If I can't be with my baby for newborn procedures, my partner would like to stay with the baby at all times.
I plan to:
Breastfeed my baby.
I would like to breastfeed my baby immediately following delivery
I would like my baby fed:
On demand.
As far as contact with my baby goes, I would like:
24-hour rooming-in with my baby.

I would like my hospital stay to be:
As long as possible

Mnei s very similar to Nicole's. I had a huge long one with my son which went NOTHING according to plan, so I kept this one short and sweet and it went almopst completely according to plan, but as I always say, I think that is becuase I stayed away from the hospital as long as possible!

here it is:

Shannon's Birth Plan

Amenities:
I would like:
· to bring music
· dim the lights
· be allowed to take pictures

Labor:
I would like:
· My partner to be with me at all times
· only my doctor, nurse, and partner present - no residents, students, etc.
· to eat if I wish
· not to have an IV - I will drink clear fluids to stay hydrated
· to walk and move as I choose
· minimal internal checks
· to be allowed to progress free of time limitations
· to be informed of all decisions (i.e. breaking my water, deciding to administer pitocin, etc.)

Pain Relief:
· I will be using my own pain management techniques, such as shower/tub
· breathing techniques

Please do not offer me pain medications, my partner will alert you if I decide I need it

Vaginal Birth:
· I would be prefer to risk a tear than have an episiotomy
· I would like my husband to be able to help catch our baby

When it's time to push I'd like to:
· try a birthing stool, chair, squatting bar, or birthing tub
· push instinctively
· be allowed to change positions for what feels right at the time

After birth:
· I would like to hold my baby right away - please wait an hour to administer eyedrops and vitamin K shot
· breastfeed as soon as possible
· let the umbilical cord finish pulsing before it is clamped and cut
· my partner cut the umbilical cord
· not get routine Pitocin after I deliver the placenta

In the event of an emergency C-section:
· My partner present at all times
· the screen lowered so I can see the baby coming out

I plan:
· to breastfeed exclusively - please do not offer anything such as formula or pacifiers to my baby at this time
· to my baby on demand
· 24-hour rooming in with my baby
· We are not immunizing at this time
· if it is a boy, my husband would like him circumcised

Wonderful that people have birth plans they can share with you.

I don't have CF. Was given a binder when I found out I was pregnant with all kinds of information -- birthing plans, what to take with you to the hospital, types of pain meds.. So I expected I'd go to the hospital, hang out with DH while I was in labor, be able to walk around during labor -- WRONG! I went into labor 2-3 weeks early because of DS's meconium illeus, so didn't have a birthing plan in place.

I didn't know this at the time, but apparently they thought DS stooled in the womb before he was born -- when my water broke, the color was off, so surprise -- I got to hang out with an internal monitor placed... So I had an iv in my arm 'cuz they blew out the vein in my hand and something shoved in my.. Well you get the picture. So even getting up to use the bathroom was a HUGE production. I refused to have an epidural because I watched too many discovery channel shows about child birth and it freaked me out. I just thought I had to have the internal monitor because that's how they did things, maybe because I was an older mom... Who knows...

When DS was born, they had a NICU crew in the room to suction out all the goo and I got to hold him once they cleaned him up and took them off to the NICU for overnight observation.

Looking back, would've done things differently, but didn't occur to me that I wouldn't have a normal birht 'cuz my pregnancy was pretty normal, uneventful. What I'd have done differently was either asked MORE questions or have my husband do so. The medical staff didn't communicate very well with me and keep me in the loop.
