Blogging downfalls...

I had been contemplating on "blogging", since some of my concerns/anecdotes were something I thought would be worth posting.

However, months back, someone here had posted about Blogs that can be viewed by potential employers (which also was a result to SD slowly fading into the walls!), and I don't want to have something like that be a minus for me.

If (Actually, when) I return to the States, I may be considering on getting into work related to having access to high security, or at least having that as an option. However, I don't want that to be affected by my possesion of a blog, or anything on the internet (which includes this), that can be used against me in a potential job position.

So, I guess until I can be certain that something like that won't have any detrimental affect on me, I don't intend on starting a blog. I suppose that leaving my name as anonymous as possible would help, however there aren't very many CF'rs living in Japan...but few in Japan know I have CF...because there are no CF centers!

I'm sure you're aware that practically anything that's put out onto the net can be traced back to another person if the person is careless. It's 4 a.m. here so i'm going to copy-paste some stuff, if sounds familiar that's why. Anywho over all if you are afraid of something being remotely traced back to you I wouldn't blog. Personally I blog because I don't care who reads it, I have a tendency to censor the things that I say about other people so no problems there, and anything that I do post is the truth. If somebody (future employer) has a problem with that then I can only pity them. Perhaps one day I will change this p.o.v. but until then it's still left up, and I continue to blog. I've seen several professional blogs that seem to focus on home life/day to day happenings that are maintained by people in good companies.. As long as blogs don't seem to be to in depth I don't think companies have a problem with them. But then again if you want access to higher security jobs then yes blogging is a risk if an employer jumps to the conclusion that you spill the beans about everything. Then again you can say the same about credit cards, anybody with the access to the right information can find out what you've been doing, where you've been eating, what you've been renting, etc. (I figure might as well make it easier for them) Now to the copy-pasting part.

How to protect yourself on the internet: (I'm more tired than I thought.. I'm not going to pick and chose what's put in and left out i'm just copying everything if it doesn't apply sorry).
Best advice I can give you is to never put your full name for anything you wouldn't want to be traced back to you. (reputable shopping sites, amazon, paypal, etc are fine though, they're secure sites and never give out your info). If you have to put something put an initial.

On your forum profile do you have your complete first and last name there? If so change it. This might be it, then again it might not. Google caches (saves a copy of) 'pages' on the internet in it's history so you can browse/search for items easily. Most people are unaware of this and thus feel no problem in entering their personal info on a site that they trust. Google goes around saving pages every so often so if you change the info what you don't want to show up could possibly still show up despite the fact that you have changed info, but should be eliminated the next time google goes around saving pages again.

Anyway as for posting on (even) here I'd ask billd how exactly cf.com uses your name; additionally see which pieces of information you give them are publicly available, and possibly ask them to make the privacy policy clearer on pages that request personal info.

End copying. Tired. Sorry fred if you've heard it all before, but better safe than sorry. Night!

Candice, thank you for the advice.

Some of what you mentioned, I thought as common sense. Some other parts of what you mentioned, I was unaware of, so I hadn't heard it before, and really appreciate that you took the time, despite being so tired, to post it for me!

I already went back to change the info on my profile, just in case. I don't know how long it would take before I get into such a field, but I have no idea how far back they would even check, so figure I'd start playing it safer now.

Next is to ask billd. I think I know how to figure out how to PM him. If I can't figure it out, hope you don't mind a PM asking how to.

G-nite Candice (and, thainks, again)!!

No problem.
This all comes from being rather anal about privacy online.
When using AOL (nasty nasty nasty thing) somebody managed to get into my account and charge $200 worth of bills when I was 12.
I've learned, unfortunately, the hard way.

When you search my name I come up a couple of times, though those are things that I have not posted myself (organizations posting my name, newspaper articles going on line). When searching my internet handle and my full name, nada. Even searching my internet handle with the initial that I use occasionally comes up with 2 unique google hits. When searching my internet handle you come up with a number of sites that I can identify and have no problem being associated with. DeviantART, these forums, wikipedia (and other mirror sites), myspace, etc.

I'm sure since I'm open about who I am on sites like facebook, that an employer who wants to know what i've been up to online can just go search for my internet handle and I don't have a problem with the information that comes up.
I guess what I'm really trying to say is know what information about you is online.
I google my handle semi-occasionally and if I have a problem with what comes up I either go close the account, or take my name/handle off of it, if I can.

Anyway another way to stay safe online (and I recommend this for anybody) is to use firefox if you're not already. (<a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.mozilla.org/)
</a>It's so much better than IE; it doesn't have as many security flaws, has tabbed browsing, you can change the look of it, it allows neat features such as having your weather forecast on your toolbar, status bar, etc.
