blue fingernails

Hello.
Does anyone else have blue fingernails? Do you know what causes this? I asked my RT and he pushed on my nails and saw I had good "blood return" and that he didn't know what was causing it. My hands and fingers are also usually very warm. They get super pale blue when I'm working out, but are always blue anyway (regardless of treatments, meds, activity, rest, etc.). My toenails aren't as bad. I know in older people blue fingernails means poor circulation. Is this a problem with CFers as well? Is there anything that can be done for it? Should I worry that they're blue??? Thanks!

It does have to do with lack of oxygen in your blood. When I'm feeling worse than usual, my fingernails are more blue and also my hands get cold. I think unless your doctors are worried, there's nothing to be alarmed about, unless it comes along with feeling worse too- than give them a call.

would that be what the O2 saturation finger thingy measures? mine is usually around 96-97%.

There's also Raynaud's syndrome where the fingers can go white or bluish white at times but I don't think they stay that way all the time.

I am 31...and have developed Raynaud's syndrome over the last few years. It gets a little worse each year. To be honest...theres nothing really the docs can do for it. But the symptoms you describe dont sound like Raynauds to me. I get cold much easier...and the tips of my fingers turn white...and very very cold. Until they warm up..they stay white. The only thing to do...is try to stay warm. To me...it does sound like it has to do with oxygen...Good luck...

Dea, have you ever looked into using time-release niacin to help with the Raynaud's? My father has lupus, and it helps him a lot. My aunt has Raynaud's, and it helps her too. It helps with circulation to the hands/feet.

Hi Miesl,
Just curious...does either of them have cystic fibrosis as well? I'm on so many medications as is..I have CF of course...CFRD, CF related arthritis, CF related thyroid problems and CF related sinusitis. So many probs, that I dont think the doctors want to put me on such a powerful medicine in the middle of all these others.

doctoryourself.com

I also have blue fingernails. 5 year now.

For me it seems to be related to tendinits.

If it is oxygen related, how can it be fixed?

I agree with the oxygen diagnosis : ). If your fingernails are just a little blue sometimes or even most of the time, it probably means that at that particular time, your oxygen is a little low. Tell your doctor the next time you go. They usually check for that anyway, or mine does anyway.
