We just purchased a Blueair air purifier 601. The CADR rating is great and it says that it emits no ozone. So it just arrived and I started to second guess my research. I looked it up again and found an article saying that since it uses negative ions it produces .03ppm of ozone which is below the goverment guideline which says they can't produce more than .05ppm. so it has an ionization process but says it is proven that since it produces such a small amount of ozone that it is safe.... so do I just return it and get one that I know doesn't emit ozone... ugh. the offices are closed today of course so I can't talk to anyone there.

any advice?

It's my understanding that HEPA filters are the best (which this brand does have and/or has as an available accessory) but ionic air purifiers as a rule are not a great idea due to the emissions (whether or not they claim to be safe.) The emissions aren't good for anyone in any quantity, but especially for those with lung disease.

Ionic purifiers shouldn't be confused with UV ones, btw. UV light is used as an additional step in some purifiers as an additional step to kill germs; it doesn't emit harmful particles like an ionic purifier.

Additional features to look for: a pre-filter to catch large particles before the air is drawn into the fan, which will help keep the fan cleaner and lengthen the life of the more expensive HEPA filter. Activated charcoal/carbon filters are also great added to the HEPA for eliminating odors.

when i purchased my air purifiers...i did quite a bit of research and came to the conclusion that if it didnt have a hepa filter then it wasnt worth buying. i also remember reading that the ionic ones do not do a very good job cleaning the air. (im not sure if this is the kind that you have) i checked with several respiratory and health care companies, as well as 2 different cf clinics and did alot of online research. (i didnt want to shell out that kind of money unless i knew it was going to work, and there are sooooo many different options!!)
