Breakfast Ideas--- to prevent mid morning low blood sugars

Let me start by saying NO I don't take insulin. I want to avoid insulin as long as I can.

I have been having random low blood sugars. Today they tanked out at 59. That is the lowest I have EVER gone. It took me forever to get them back up (2 + hour to be more accurate).

I when I deviate from my regular bean burrito at breakfast then my sugars are all messed up. Yes, I know a bean burrito is not normal breakfast food (and no it is not a breakfast burrito--- it is refried beans and a burrito wrap (shell) and no extras).

I don't like eggs (can't stand the flavor or the texture). Milk causes my sugars to spike and oatmeal reminds me too much of mucus. I feel like my options are very limited.

ANY help is appreciated.

sausage or bacon and fruit. you gain look at the choices of waffles or pancakes and see which offers the best carb count. so you like toast? have you gone up and down the breakfast isle of your grocery stores or see how some resturants cook there breakfasts?

I dont know much about sugars so, I'm definitely an ANYone with possible bad suggestions :), but id jump right into more lunch foods like your bean burrito: turkey n cheese on wheat w/ lettuce and mayo, pb&j, tuna salad sandwich, pierogis, meatball sub, raisin nut bread with cream cheese, olive bread with tons of butter, cheese and crackers, pita and hummus. I need to go to the grocery store with this list...

It's not for everyone, if you're really struggling with getting enough food in in a day this will make it even harder, but you can look into Intermittent Fasting or atleast the theory behind it.

I've been borderline CFRD for a while now and I figure it doesn't hurt to experiment so I've been trying this (or something like it anyway) for a while now and my bloodsugars have become lower and more stable which was my initial reason for giving this a go. Also since starting I can't remember having a real insulin low like I would also frequently have before.
YMMV but it's interesting.

my go to "breakfast burrito" would be an avocado and cheddar cheese quesadilla. Sometimes I throw in tomatoes, or peppers, sometimes I mix it up and use brie, but that seems to be a good mix of long lasting carbs for me.

sometimes I also do a potato fried up in little pieces with onion, and then I throw in what I have like avocado, cheese, tomato, spinach, peppers, leftovers etc etc.

Also, sometimes when I'm stuck in a rut, I look at a breakfast diner menu online to get ideas. Good luck!

bloggymom, you didn't say if you're CFRD, borderline, or what. Assuming you're developing CFRD or have already been diagnosed. It is interesting to me that the breakfast that works best for you is mainly starch - long-chain carbohydrates. No simple sugars, very little fat. The beans should are a good source of protein and fiber, both; and fiber also helps slow the absorption of carbs. I think it's a fine breakfast! Now, trying other foods and experiencing a blood sugar spike after is normal - happens to everybody who eats things with simpler sugars in them, even people without diabetes. WITH diabetes, we have to compensate. It sounds to me like you are trying to compensate with diet, but taking it to possibly an inappropriate level. You may be depriving your body of much needed nutrients in the long term. Basic rule of thumb is that you need to first eat to satisfy your CF and then adjust for the diabetes. You may need to face the music and start taking a small amount of insulin. If you're having lows, then your body is metabolizing what carbs you're taking in and not storing any of them. Are you on an oral diabetic drug? These can cause lows quite easily.

Anyway - though we can lend advice, you're really going to have to talk to your CF doctor and hopefully an endocrinologist experienced with CF patients.

I talked with my endocrinologist. She thinks it may have been the fact that I deviated from my normal breakfast food. I have gone back to the morning burritos and late morning granola bar. So far much better!! I also now think it might be my meds. I think they may be lowering my sugars 2-3 hours after taking them.

I have tried oral diabetic meds and they lowered my sugars too much.

I am still considered early diabetes. I steer away from simple sugars other for Thanksgiving dinner and my anniversary. No holiday cookies for me... ever!!

I am on LOTS OF medication for my Mycobacteria. The lows started when we started all of these new medications. I am suppose to talk with my dietician soon.... hopefully. In the mean time I will stick with the burritos. I can pretty much eat what I want after lunch but in the mornings... NO deviations from what works.

Food has always been a sore spot for me so... this is not new. I can't taste. :(

Oh i know! This horrible feeling of having no appetite to eat anything and everything you MUST eat seems disgusting. That horrible feeling of not savoring anything, like having no taste at all. Food is a major pleasure. Im not ready to denounce it.
I would start with that. You should get your taste back. Whatever it takes. More Ivs? Oral antibiotics? Nebs? They help me regain my appetite. Zantac helps sometimes as well. If this gets fixed i think it misht help your whole problem.
I know nothing about diabetes or pre diabetic phases. But i was thinking common sense. Maybe small meals can help. Protein bars? Little snacks? Bagels and coffee? Im just guessing!

Take fresh fruits and veggies to be safe. Because typically they have low calories and high water content such as broccoli, leafy greens, eggplant and the like. And then end with a piece of fresh, ripe fruit.
