Does anyone have any idea how often a "CF diagnosis" is made after rectal blockage on an ultra-sound is found? I realize I'm not on a physician board, but I'm wondering if this is a fairly common way to find a CF diagnosis. A friend just today mentioned that her OB/GYN wanted to do CF testing because of bowel blockage. Just thought I'd pick your brains... Thanks a bunch, Carey

It is called echogenic bowel (not sure if I spelled it right) and it is a very good indication of cystic fibrosis. It is of course never for sure until they can test the child but it is a very good and usually accurate indication.

I had heard of cases where it appears in the sonogram that the intestines are outside the body (or something to this effect) and that can sometimes be a precursor to CF, is this the same thing you guys are talking about, or something different?

I think your thinking of something different.. i havent heard of any cases of intestines being out side of the fetus, and pointing directly to cf..

Thanks for all of your input. We haven't heard back on the test results, but we're hoping everything turns out ok. I was just wanting to get an idea of how common this was. Thanks again, Carey

I believe sometimes (and this may be very dated information, as I think I learned it when Coll was a newborn) ileostomies were/are done where part of the intestines are left outside the body until reversal of the ileostomy was completed? But I may be wrong! Have a good day.
