Broken Arm

Well I haven't been on in a couple of days because Jason broke his elbow. We went to the ortho surgeon today and it looks like he needs surgery for pins. I am so frustrated for him. As if he doesn't have enough to handle. We are going to need to have it done at Children's Hospital which has a CF clinic but it is not his. I am hoping we have a positive experience. They said they like to keep them overnight. I am trying to have him have it done early in the am so he doesn't have to stay over. Our clinic is at DuPont Hospital and they are in private rooms. My fear is that at this hospital in a non-private room and just overnight in general - we are asking to get more bugs. Well I will fight the good fight on Monday and see what happens. The anesthes. from CHOP wants to check Jason out and talk to his CF Dr. at DuPont before any def. plans are made. If anyone has any suggestions regarding non cf related surgeries and hospitalizations for someone with cf - please let me know. I am feeling very overwhelmed right now.

I just wanted to say you can request a private room, you may not get it BUT the squeaky wheel gets the grease. my daughter was in the hospital once needing surgery when she was 5 months. The nurses were trying to tell me she'ld have to share a room with another patient. I just kept bugging them and my husband spoke with the nurses at the nurses' station because I was ready to blow my lid. But, we got a private room, they probobly figured it was easier to give us the private room than deal with me. He could also wear a mask when he's in public areas in the hospital.

I definitely would request a private room, BUT be sure they know its because of his CF nor just personal preference. Insurance companies dont usually pay for private rooms if it is requested by the patient & since his CF will have to be addressed while in the hospital it will be probably a secondary dx which can require a private room. If he would have a private room at his regular hospital then things can be expected the same for his CF care (in my opinion) somewhere else even if its not normal protocal for them!

Rebecca and Melissa - Thanks so very much for responding and your words of wisdom. I will def. fight for a private room. Sometimes I just get overwhelmed and frustrated. I do good on a daily basis - it just seems that when anything extra in life happens, esp. to Jason, I have trouble not getting really down about things. I am feeling a bit better emotionally which is good because Jason is def. getting frustrated with the limited amount of things to do with the way his cast is. Last spring it was a broken foot and a tune up with IV's at home. This spring - hopefully just the arm - I think that is enough for him! I am rambling - sorry! Thanks again!!

My daughter fell in soccer in the Fall and they thought she broke her elbow, it turned out that she dislocated her radius. She did have to have surgery, they had to open up her arm and put it back in place. I almost felt the ortho surgeon wasn't concerned enough about the CF. Turns out she did great she had surgery at 8:00 am and we were home by noon.

All you have to do is request that the DR request you to have a private room and if they refuse, ask them to put it in his chart that it was refused. They are opening themselves up for a lawsuit if you ask, dont get it, and he catches a bug from the other patient. In our experience, they will usually do it no problem, but the chart scare, works as a last resort!

Good luck, boys will be boys!

great suggestion, Karen - about putting it on the chart that they refused.
I never thought of that. And I thought I knew all about being pushy.....
