I was diagnosed on my first birthday (I just turned 25) and actually just had a lung transplant.

I took meds all my life but was still told last year that I had developed bronchiectasis.

My understanding of bronchiectasis is that it occurs from repeated lung infections and the damage that is caused to the lung tissue from the bacteria. It is possible that this may have been caused due to lack of treatment in your situation, BUT it can also happen if you have always been taking medication (i.e. the way it did with me). I don't have the CF lung issues or the bronchiectasis now that I have had transplant though.

That would actually be a really good question to ask your doc to get better clarification if you really want to know.

Take Care,
Lindsey

*holds flag up* I'VE GOT BRONCHIECTASIS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Let me tell you (in normal people's terms) what it is. Bronchiectasis is the scarring of the lungs by either chronic or repeated lung infections. Accompanied to this is the fact that the bronchi are chronically swollen and thus produce mucus (this is why several docs confuse it with CF - which i DON'T have). This mucus also scars the lungs b/c it pools and is sticky and thick and is the perfect breeding ground for infections - YAY!

Um what else? The scarring is irreversable, and the more scar tissue and infections you get, the worse it becomes. It is a progressive condition as well. I need a lung tx as the result of my bronchiectasis, which i got dx with at 17.

I hope that helped!
