bug bombs

I have a question. We own a duplex and the people on the other side of the house want to do a bug bomb. Anyone had any experience with these? Or known the side effects for people with lung problems? All the renters want to do is get rid of the spiders and I don't think a bug bomb even does that. Should I just tell them no because with all my medicine and my nebulizer and vest I think it would contaminate that stuff. Any advice would be great!

Thanks,

My best advice on that one is dont do it! That stuff leaves a film all over everything. You absolutely do not want that film of insecticide getting into your nebulizer or anything at all. Years ago when i was healthy and did nto have to do any treatments or nebulize anything, we had an exterminator come to rid our apt. of roaches. I told the landlord NOT to do a bug bomb, and guess what he did? I found 2 bug bombs in the apt. I had to sleep somewhere else that night, because i was afraid of what effect it might have on my lungs. There was a film all over everything, it was awful. Needless to say, we moved out shortly. I cant even imagine why they make this stuff............................

Thanks Diane!
That's what I thought. I just hope they don't do it anyway. Of course if they do we can just kick them out and find someone else to live there.

Here's what you do about spiders: get one of those gardern sprayer (they usually have fertalizer or pesticides in them but you can get empty ones at any garden center) put about a teaspoon or so of cinnamon oil in there, hook it up to the hose and spray all around the foundation of the house. Spiders hate cinnamon and they won't come in. You're place will smell good for a few days, but the effect usually lasts all summer and fall! You can spray the roof too in case they are coming in through the attic. It doesn't do anything for the ones already in the house but eventually you won't have any more! And you're right, bug bombs are usually for roaches.

I say no no no!!! That bomb will land on everything and
seep into cracks and crevices and end up in your home. You
should not have to be subjected to that.
This link states that bug bombs are not effective against spiders
so maybe if they saw that they might look into a
safer alternative. I hope they listen to you and respect
your health needs.
Would a bug bomb actually seep through walls though and settle on her stuff??? I can see the smell maybe seeping through and even small amounts of chemical if there are cracks, but in order to settle, wouldn't it have to fall from somewhere???

I agree that bug bombs should not be used by CFers though. And, they are for roaches. And, when I've sprayed Raid around the house floorboards, we smell it for days! YUCK!!! I would deffinately be afraid of the smell seeping in and bothering your lungs! yikes!

Good Luck convincing them to do otherwise.

if the two units are separated by doors then you could probably make sure that most of the bug bomb does not get into your place. however, i hate chemical stuff like that and i don't trust it. best to avoid it if possible.

I too have heard that sprays, etc really don't do much for spiders.
Something we've used in the past to catch spiders are those mouse glue paper things (the flat ones). If you have indoor pets or kids, you have to be very careful because they can stick to the bottom of your foot like nothing else!
We try to put them under cabinets, under dressers, in corners, etc where the chances of someone stepping on them are slim. It really works. Spiders try to walk across the strip and the rest is history.
Possibly they could try this?

I don't know how this would work for you or if it's anything you would really want to do but once when I lived in an apartment building we were overrun with cockroaches and one tenant refused to have their apartment bombed because of health reasons. The cockroaches were so bad and the health issues so awful that the owner really almost had to bomb so finally they arranged to have the family with health problems stay at a hotel for a week after the bombing and to have their apartment cleaned professionally before they came back. No cockroaches and no risk for the ill kids - tho' staying in the hotel was both a drag and an adventure they said.

Just wanted to chime in and say, I'm with Sonia - if they do choose to use the bug bomb I can't imagine it getting into your side of the house and onto your things --(unless it is a very drafty old house or not originally built as separate units) I would think your belongings would not end up with any residue on them unless you set one off inside your own part of the duplex.

For what it's worth, I went out to look at the package of bug bomb I last purchased but never used and it does have both a picture of a spider and lists in print that it is for use against spiders (and several other things)

Not, that I'm a big fan of using the stuff ~ but I'd say renters do have a right to choose to use something like that (or ask that you hire a professional) but they should also be required to let you know in advance that they are doing it, so you could also leave the residence, just incase it irritates your lungs.

Anyway, hope you find a solution that makes everyone happy :)

i dont see any problem with using a bug bomb. ive used them before without any problems. you set them off. leave the house for a few hours, come back and wipe everything down, wash the floors and vacuum the carpet. no biggie. oh, and they do work

oh and cover up anything you dont want to get bombed with an old sheet or just remove it!

Oh, I forgot to mention that cinnamon oil can be a little hard to find. I think my mom had to special order it from a pharmacy. And be careful when you handle it, it can burn your skin if there is direct contact, but once its diluted it ok. Trust me this really works! My old room at my parents place wasn't insulated very well because it was an addition and I used to get these huge wolf spiders in there. I'm a total arachniphobe so my mom srayed the cinnamon around and no more spiders!

OMG, i didn't think that BUG BOMBS were a bad idea. I have used them twice in our home to get rid of the white tip spiders we were getting.

I fIgured they are more dangerous (the white tip spiders, i mean). I also guess Olivia is still to little to telll me if it had an affect on her in any way. I hope not, though.

Although, we did stay at the in-laws place overnight so that smell wasn't as bad. It acatually didn't smelll at all when we got back home.
