BUN and creatinine

My husband just called and said that both his BUN and creatinine levels are too high. He is currently taking tobraymicin and ceztaz via IV. They are going to stop his tobra because of these levels. Has anyone else had these levels go up too high when on antbiotics? If so, what happened? Also, does anyone know what "symptoms" these elevated levels would cause?

Thanks!

No symptoms I can think of. It's 99% likely it's just the IV antibiotics and once they stop the tobra or adjust the dose his creatinine and BUN should be fine. Creatinine and BUN indicate kidney function and antibiotics are very taxing on the kidneys. If they remain high for a prolongued period of time it could cause permanent damage to the kidneys. Really, though, it's very likely that once the meds are changed or adjusted his levels should drop back to normal. I don't know if ceftaz affects the kidneys as easily as the tobra does. Hope this helps.

Hi Lisa,

I have had kidney failure twice so my Bun and Creatinine levels went up high both times. The first time I needed dialysis and the second time I didn't, but still had what was considered kidney failure. In my experience the symptoms depend on how high the #s are, because there is a range of 'high'.

The feelings I had when my #s were high but not high enough for dialysis were, lathargic (could sleep for about 1 day straight) and felt physically heavy if I got up to walk around. I was peeing okay though. My back ached a lot.

The feelings I had when my #s were high enough for dialysis were, extremely lathargic (could literally sleep for 2+ days with occasional wake ups), no appetite, not peeing at all (big sign with very high numbers), jaundice (off and on), throwing up, I was lucid half the time -and half not, and a terrible rotting feeling in my gut, big back aches and my limbs felt like tree trunks.

Both times for me, they took me off all major meds (like Tobra and others) in order to see if those were causing the elevated levels. Eventually my #s went back to normal.

I hope he starts feeling better soon!

Hubby only has one kidney and has to be careful about meds or his levels go up too. Whenever he starts complaining about pain on his right side I start forcing water and cranberry suppliments down him.
