Just wondering if anyone else here's doctor has told them no more burning candles b/c the smoke is bad for kids lungs. I love candles so much and I'm miss burning them.

We were told that. And no open fires (like fireplace) either.
My husband said the scent of most candles brought out his asthma too.

Burning candles don't bother me, but open fires make my lungs sieze up on me. I can't be around bonfires, or fireplaces because I go into a coughing fit and my lungs sieze up on me.

I always used to burn candles before DS was born. But a woman I work with has white carpet, white walls -- she's like "Mrs. Clean" Anyway she got lines of soot that showed up near her cold air returns and vents -- cleaning people said it was because she burned candles all the time. So her husband forbid her to use candles.

Some candles burn really clean -- soy ones do. But some are really sooty and nasty. I only burn candles in the bathroom while I soak in the tub and when DS isn't in the house.

I've never been told not to burn candles! I usually have them lit in my kitchen almost daily. My daughter is pretty good about letting me know if something bothers her and she's never said anything about my candles. I will have to mention it to her and her cf docs.

Also, we go camping in the summer and her favorite part of the day is sitting around the campfire at night. That hasn't seemed to bother her either. I will ask her docs about this also.

I tell you, I am constantly learning!

I really think it boils down to the individual person. I have heard of many CFers being affected by the candles and open campfires and yet many others don't have any problem with it at all. I really think it's an individual thing and if your child doesn't really notice a difference when you are burning them and they say it doesn't bother them, I wouldn't be too concerned about it.

I dont have a problem with candles in general, but I do with the scent. It is definitely an allergic reaction. The only ones I dont seem to have problems with are vanilla & cinnamon. As far as the smoke....when I blow the candle out, If I happen to breath while that nasty smoke is floating from the wick I close up tight. Then it goes away. I never had problems othe than that!

YOU CAN NOW BUY A WARMING PLATE SO THAT YOU CAN HAVE THE SCENT OF THE CANDLE WITHOUT ACTUALLY LIGHTING IT. YOU CAN GET THEM AT ANY CRAFTS STORE. REMEMBER THE LITTLE PLATES THAT YOU CAN PLUG IN TO KEEP YOUR CUP OF COFFEE WARM? THEY ARE JUST LIKE THAT.

WHAT I DO TO KEEP A NICE SCENT IN THE HOUSE IS I PUT A LARGE POT OF WATER ON THE STOVE WITH CINNIMON AND VANILLA EXTRACT IN IT AND LET IT SIMMER. PEOPLE ALWAYS TELL ME WHEN THEY COME IN MY HOUSE THE SMELL REMINDS THEM OF WHEN THEIRS MOMS WOULD BAKE COOKIES AND DESSERTS. I FIGURE I AM NOT USING ANY TYPE OF CHEMICALS SO IT SHOULD NOT IRITATE COURTNEY.

Seana, good idea putting a pot on the stove to simmer. I just may try that. Thanks!

Your very welcome Sue.

Cinnamon and vanilla are MUCH cheaper than buying candles and bottled scents, and I would assume better for the lungs.

Seana

cinnamon.......is that the correct spelling?????
