Burp/cough question

maggie just finished a course of oral anitbiotics yesterday. The antibiotic seemed to work quickly this time ,her cough sounded much better within 2-3 days. Her cough seemed almost completely gone after about 7 days. She had alot of problems with gastric distress this time with the antibiotic or stomach virus or combo of both. The doc put her on prevacid which seemed to help. Anyway, she still seems very gassy, burping alot then usually after coughing, like a throat clearing cough. Never used to do this before. I give her acidophilus every day. She is playing great, eating great, good energy, no runny nose, going to nursery school. I'm hoping once her belly calms down, back on her regular regime without hardcore anti's, this burp/cough thing will go away. It seems like a wierd thing to call the doc for...burp/coughing. Is it just her tummy upset from anti treatment? i don't want to miss anything. Also, she seems to do it while doing her vest(course it shakes up her tummy. She never had stomach upset while doing her vest before.

Thanks for your input,
Rebecca(mom to Sammy 8 no CF and Maggie 3 1/2 with CF)

I don't know what antibiotics your daughter was taking, but I will give my experience. I usually depending on the med, get nausea (especially with Cipro) and burping seems to relieve that feeling sometimes. I will even force myself to burp (and at times will pat my back or have someone else pat my back to "burp" me - I know that sounds odd). I don't really know why it gives relief but it does for me. That may be why your daughter was burping. Just an idea as I know I tend to burp more when taking oral antibiotics.

If you are concerned about it and it continues after antibiotics call the doc and ask if it is normal. No harm in asking.

This reminded me though I used to get the hiccups alot as a kid and everytime I got them they were hiccup/burps. I would hiccup followed immediately by a burp. It drove my parents nuts, but for whatever reason I couldn't help it. I still get that every now and then but not everytime. Sometimes it is just easier and feels better to burp and get that air out then hold it in was my reasoning as a kid.

Hope it all works out,
Lindsey

I will add too that how most CFers on here talk about being gassy and farting/pooting. I never really got/get that way. I do on a rare occasion(yes I have CF digestive issues and take enzymes) mostly when I am gassy the pain is relieved by burping though. I rarely get the urge to poot, mostly just burp.

When DS has been an augmentin he's been a little burpier, urpier. And they'd smell like antibiotic. Can't remember when he's been on Cipro. Can remember less of an appetite.

Thank you so much for your replies. It does seem that my daughter is forcing herself to burp, then she forces herself to cough after. She also seems to be hiccuping alot as well. I figure it takes a couple days for the antibiotic to get out of her system. She just sounds yucky when she does it and I'm afraid she might throw up. I think the antibiotic really messed with her digestion but she 's eating and drinking and wants to play, her color is good. I tend to worry, what if it's something else alot.

DS also has a tendency to try to cough while he's eating. At first I thought he swallowed wrong, but he thinks he's burping. He MAKES himself cough. He acts like he's hacking up a hairball and then says, I burped. He also continues to remind us of the yogurt episode. Ate a ton of yogurt and had a wet burp and as he tells it "I vomit on Grandma's table." Toddlers are weird.

Hi my husband - 31 w/CF had always been gassy and always had this "clear the throat cough". Turned out to be that he had acid reflux and his enzymes needed to be adjusted. The acid blocker helps with the little tickle in the throat cough. Weird...but true. The gassy thing still happens, but it is usually food related. If he eats a lot of pork (higher fat??) it gets worse. When he adjusted the enzymes it did get better though.

Hope it passes soon.
