Can CF Kill

I have been hearing lately about how some people are dying from CF, and it has gave me the gose bumps!, and I wonn'ted to know if it was true someone please tell me!!!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-shocked.gif" border="0">

I am sorry, I see that you do have CF, how old are you and do you talk to your parents or doctors about CF?????

People die from a lot of things. Yes, including CF. But you don't need to dwell on that unless you absolutely have to. Try to keep on top of it, and live as if every day was your last while maintaining reasonable plans for the future anyway.

yes people can die from cf you see about 5 months ago i lost a really good mate and we new one another for about 10 year and he was always not the best of looking after himself but he had a big heart and when i found out that he had died i changed but onlyu a little bit but it was a shock to me and everone else and boy do i miss the guy alot. i now do every thing i can because i have learnt a very important lession DO NOT LET CYSTIC FIBROSIS WIN BECUASE IF YOU DO IT WILL TAKE YOUR LIFE.

Yes, CF is considered fatal, but also keep in mind that right now the oldest person with CF is 76. I don't know how old you are, but I found out "the truth" about CF when I was 15. I never knew that I could expect to live to be 85, kinda silly I guess. Anyway, I found out from the internet, not the best way to find out most things. So, please talk to your parents or CF social worker if you want to know more. In the mean time, take great care of yourself!

I am so sorry that you have found out one of the truths about CF from a website. CF can be fatal - but, alot of things can be - including walking out in front of a moving car. We should treasure each and every day because it could truly be our last. I am soooooooo thankful that my parents have been honest with me about everything since I was old enough to understand. They told me about CF and possible consequences from a very young age - this is why I have always done my treatments and lived life to the fullest. My parents have never told me I could not do something - I have always been encouraged to try everything and it was my decision if I no longer wanted to do that activity. I am 12 years old - I have been a cheerleader for 2 years, I swim, and I play the Oboe in the school band.

People can die from driving a car, walking across the street, getting on a plane or just about anything else we do everyday, theres no sense in dwelling on it or life will pass you by. Please make sure you elaborate before you post something like you just did.

At the same time, let's not downplay just how serious it is, or brush it off with "could have" analogies that don't really relate. What was that statistic --about 60% of CF-ers die before their 18th birthday, despite the "average" lifespan technically being in the 30s? That doesn't happen with those who cross the street, or use air travel.

I've found that this illness can come close to destroying you psychologically if it hits you hard before you acknowledge, and fully understand, your mortality. If you survive that, though, and find reasons to still want to carry on, you can appreciate life like never before.

Win, although I agree that the severity of CF and the future should not be downplayed, I believe this was a young child that posted the question and the answer right before my post was quite inappropriate (I thought) in the sense that if I were a young child it would leave me hanging and devistated. IF people are going to reply to a serious question like this, they should elaborate-as I see that you did. That's the point I was trying to make, I hope that clears it up a bit.

I dunno. At that age, I would probably have preferred bluntness to overprotective, undeservedly optimistic there'll-be-a-cure bullshit or other denial (not accusing anyone here of that; doctors and parents can suck on that front, though).

win, I agree with you that nobody should BS another person-regardless of their age. What I was meaning and trying to relay (and apparently doing an ineffective job) is that if we are going to provide answers to this youngsters questions, it ought to be with some facts, statistics, and the avilability of a discussion if the person has questions based on the information they are given-this didn't seem to be the case here but I can't be sure. I think the CHAT option on this web page would be more appropriate if anything, or this youngster should sit down with somebody and have a talk about it. I believe in honesty, there's just an appropriate place and opportunities for discussion and questions that need to be afforded. I hope that makes more sense.

MY cf has nearly killed me twice but it was mainly my fault i made myself to busy to do my meds which i shouldnt of done but now i make time for them cos i dont want to go through wot i went through again from Jo xx

median lifespan is in the mid 30s. Which means half and half not 60%. You have years to go with new treatments coming along ect.... many of the people on here had a lifespan of a lot less years when they found out, and now it is all the way up to the mid 30s. It will keep moving on up!! You or anyone else for that matter, do not know what life has in store for them so live for today!

I think the time to tell a child is when they start asking. My daughter started asking at age 6. We told her appropriate information for her age. She is aware of her situation but is also aware, like many of you have said already, that you can die in other ways. I think an informed patient is best equipped to take care of themselves better. We have also never let Sarah feel sorry for herself or use CF to her advantage. People have lots of illnesses and you just need tolearn how to mange it the best way you can.

Eventually, the lungs just get so bad. Heart failure can happen as well...because the heart is overworked from pumping so hard because of not being able to breathe well. These are the main ones...I guess weight loss could cause death...but is not likely in one with CF. Hope this helps...
