can't catch a break

My son Josh spent 3 weeks on IVs in February because of a sinus infection. He was feeling better until this week. NOW ITS BACK!!!

He is still getting caught up with the work he missed before. He just started tennis at school. He is SOOOOOOOOOO bummed, I haven't even called the doctor yet. He had a 2nd surgery a year ago. What next?

This is what he's on for meds
Bactrim
Amikacin nebs
Nasonex
Ocean spray
Allegra
....and all the regular CF stuff.

I feel so bad for him, he has been rather fragile emotionally since his hospitalization. He feels crappy.

Have any of you had nasty sinus problems that won't go away?

Thanks
Jane

He had a fever of 103 for 5 days. After being checked last week, we were told it was just a virus. All of his blood labs were ok.
So, this week he's completely wiped out and not eating. Fevers are down to normal to 100. We called today and they said, just a virus.

Just now, his fever is 103 again, his o2 sats 91 and his heart rate is 154. I'm waiting for the doctor to call back, but it looks like we're on our way back to Children's. Poor kid.
I'll let you know.

If it's necessary to go on meds again, why does he have to miss so much school? Do home IVs and send him off. I've gone to class with IVs before. Even pushed saline and stuff in the middle of class. No big deal. If he has a problem with people knowing, it can be easily hidden. He can do saline and stuff in the bathroom. And that way he doesn't have to catch up on 3 weeks of missed school.

My son will be 14 tomorrow. He just finished 2 weeks of IV's primarily for sinuses. Today the wind is blowing and he is really congested. He hates sinus surgeries he finds little relief from them. He also refuses to go to school when he takes IV's but hates missing out. What about your son? Tries to keep up at home.

Thanks Emily and Karen, Josh usually takes sudafed too. We didn't know if he could take that with the allegra. Karen, do you think Troy takes zyrtec? That sounds like what you said. Josh has had that before.

Emily, Josh did come home on IVs last time, but he had missed about six days before he went in. He was re-admitted and missed some more when the infection didn't go away. He has no problem going to school w/IVs if he has to. He goes to the same school where I teach, so we work together keeping his stuff discreet. Its just a pain.

He ended up getting a fever today so I did call the doc. We're going up tomorrow to be checked (probably admitted). I'll let you know.

Thanks again!

Jane, I know it's a pain. I didn't know he was doing them at home. I've heard a lot of people being told they aren't allowed. So I'm never sure if people know that.

If he does do them at home and still has to miss a lot before they'll let him go, then I'm out of suggestions.

Hi,
We're so relieved...
Josh saw his doctor today and CAME HOME. His x-ray was better than the last time, so she thinks it may be a virus or allergies causing sinus issues. The ENT did a sinus wash and sent us home. He is also dehydrated because he is a stubborn little sh*t and won't drink much. He said on the way home "I better start taking care of myself". DUH!!! I told him to start with water=health.

Thanks for the advice...I'm going to schedule allergy tests tomorrow.
Now I can relax a bit

Jane, my daughter is always battling with sinus problems too. She takes zytec-D. Prior to that she took claritin D. And she also does the nasonex. This seems to help her.

I'm sorry Jane.
I've avoided sinus troubles my wholelife-but now they're creeping up on me.
I may have to have surgery very soon-I go for my 2nd eval monday.
I can't offer any pick-me-ups. I'm very bummed too. It just feels like things are endlessly creeping up on me. And the frustrating thing about the sinuses is, what ever I do to take care of myself, it doens't seem to matter. My sinuses act up when they want how they want.
I hope your little guy gets some answers! Luv,c

Unfortunately it's probably time for a little more surgery. I'm 40 years old and i've had sinus surgery 7 times since 1996. The longer you wait the worse the infection will get and the surgery will have to be more intrusive. I go in every two years to have my sinuses cleaned out. Just part of the life of a Cfer.
