You are right, the costs do add up. So here's what i have found that works for us or have helped us out when we needed it.

1. In the state of washington, Medicaid covered this Rx for my husband. Is your child on any sort of medical coupon, disabled children program... If so, I would recommend trying to get your childs doctor to write a Rx for the Boost (or ensure-same thing) and take it to the pharmacy to see if the medicaid/or disabled childrens will cover it (if your child has that coverage). They cover it too in CA but mark isn't elgible for medicaid because I make too much money so....

2. Some private insurance companies cover boost/ensure shakes. My military insurance doesn't, but I am appealing it because the cases where they will covere it states (in the benificary handbook), "...inborn errors of metabolism, conditions of MALABOSRBTION..." Hellooooooo, CF is a condition of malabsorbtion... They agree with that point, but are still fighting coverage of it, so I am fighting right back with them and won't stop until I win. But off my soap box, look into you or your spouses insurance covering it. Although I would think the medicaid would be the better bet.

3. Try this website http://www.needymeds.com/papforms/407.pdf again, we were unable to be helped by them because of my income, but I know that they have helped others. This assistance grant (in the form of ensure shakes) is directly from the laboratory that makes ensure and the company that distributes it.

4. Try requesting assistance from the Milan Foundation: http://www.milanfoundation.org/ or the reach for the stars foundation: http://www.r4stars.org/faq.htm They give grants for various things. THey may be able to send you a check payable to walmart or target for the use of purchasing boost shakes, or send you a check made out to you.

Let me know if you have any other questions,

Julie (wife to Mark 24 w/CF)

Julie,

Thanks SO much for this information - - I've been gone for a few days so I just saw it now. You have some great ideas that I'm going to check out. I had no idea that some insurance policies would cover Boost/Ensure. Since we're moving out of state and changing insurance carriers (for the better!), I'm going to check on this right away. Unfortunately, we're in the same situation as you and your husband - - my spouse's income (although nothing incredible) is too high to qualify for any aid. I'll keep you posted. Thank you SO SO much, Julie!

PS - sort of a silly thing I've noticed: I usually buy Boost at Wal-Mart because of the price, but I've noticed it's getting steeper and steeper. Someone told me that as a product sells more, the store will raise the prices. Each time I buy it, it gets more expensive! So, I've started "mixing up" where I buy Boost. Surprisingly, I've found the best prices at Target lately. They even have the 8 packs (usually 6 packs, but you get 2 for free) for around $6.50.

Hee hee, we bought three packs (six plus two extra) of Boost from Target last night!!! Walgreens has really good prices on "store brand" ensure.
