Carrier daughter is pregnant

I am the mom to a 20 year with CF. My daughter who is due to deliver a baby boy in May just found out that she is definately a carrier of CF. The dad currently lives in Autralia where they will be moving to after the baby is born.
I am trying to find out the best plan of action. My state currently does not have newborn testing. Is there a particular plan that should be put into place?

Is the dad a carrier also? Does he have cf? If he isnt a carrier or anything then the baby will at worst only be a carrier itself.

I know that in Australia (well Perth anyway) if one parent is a carrier of CF they will test the other parent also and I don't believe it costs anything. Are they moving to Australia as soon as the baby is born or afterwards? I would say that if the baby does have CF then you may see symptoms of it almost immediately after birth (although not always) in which your local hospital should act upon it. Otherwise contact the childrens hospital in the state they are moving to and find out through them. I would say they would want to test the baby when he gets to Australia as screening is now done in every state/territory and they are quite pro-active with it.

If you want to email me the details of which state and area they are moving to I will do my best to get the information for you? My email address is diana.james@bigpond.com.au

Fingers crossed though he is born healthy without CF. And if he does have it, you will be happy to know there is fantastic support in Australia to cope with the illness.

Hi, i too am from Australia (20mins south of Sydney). I just wanted to let you know that Diana is right. So if one parent is a carrier of CF they will test the other parent free of charge. But you will most deffintley notice any signs after his birth.

Congratulations on your un-born grandson and may he be a healthy little boy.

Good luck
Eli
