Carrying 1/2 a gene

My sister in law just got told that she carries HALF the gene for Cystic Fibrosis. We live in Washington State, and her results were sent to the University of Washington to try to evaluate what 1/2 a gene means. At this point we are waiting. Has anyone heard of carrying 1/2 a gene for CF, and what that means to her unborn child? My brother was tested yesterday and the results won't be back for 10 days.

Hello my name is Steve Ratajack. I am 16 and have CF. Ok you need to have a basic backround in genetics to understand this, but i will try to lay it out flat. Cystic fibrosis in gene terms is represented by the letter n. If you have NN, that means you are completely clean, no traces of cf. If you have Nn, that means you have 1/2 the gene. This means you are a carrier of the cf gene. If you have nn, this means you have cf. Now since she has 1/2 gene the following can be affected with here child. If she meets a man with NN, there is a 1/2 chance of the baby being completely clean, and a 1/2 chance of being a carrier. If she meets this kind of man, there is no possible way for the child to have cf. If she meets a man that is a carrrier, that is he is Nn. This means the baby will have a 1/4 chance of being completely clean, 1/2 chance of being a carrier, and a 1/4 chance of having cf. If she meets a man with cf, there will be 1/4 chance of the baby being a carrier, and a 3/4 chance of the baby having CF. so that is what a 1/2 gene will have an affect on here baby means. Glad i could help. If you have any questions contact me at Hellieger1@hotmail.com

You should be genetically screened as well, just so you know if you are a carrier. A carrier can pass a carrier gene on to their kids. My half-sister is a carrier from our mom. Debbie23 yr old w/ Cf
