Caught influenza despite flu shot!

I have the flu. I am on day 2 of Tamiflu and day 4 of symptoms. Has anyone else had the flu despite having the flu shot? I've only ever had the flu once before and it was when I didn't get the flu shot and it turned into pneumonia (in 1999). My lungs are doing okay. A little burning which concerns me but I am plugging away at doing my pt nonetheless. Just feeling miserable. Any suggestions?

Not all strains of Influenza are covered by the shot, also some strains rapidly mutate and the vaccination is ineffective against those.

A friend of mine's daughter age 8 wcf caught influenza A as well despite having the shot. Tamiflu, increased treatments, rest. Had issues with chest tightness and plugs, but otherwise is doing fine. Took a couple weeks before she felt back to normal, but she DID feel normal.

DH got H1N1 last year and took tamiflu and in addition to the extreme fatigue, indicated his lungs burned. He'd had the flu before, but this one with that added symptom concerned him in terms of fear that DS would get it.

My dd w/cf gets a flu shot every year and she still gets the flu. Last year it seemed like it was a milder form, no cough, just fever and runny nose. this year it much worse, with horrible cough and everything.

I read somewhere that flu shots are only 50% effective.

The flu shot gives helps your body grow antibodies against the flu (not all strains though!)
You will still catch it but hopefully not develop symptoms, when your body catches it fast.

I grew Influenza B two years ago, after having had the flu shot.
I am post tx and probably my body can't do much with the flu shot because my immune system is compromised.

It could be that somehow your body didn't really produce any antibodies when you had the flu shot. Or maybe you havea flu strain that wasn't in the shot this year.

So sorry you have the flu! Pretty sure I had it this year and my daughter with CF too even though we all get the flu shot. We did not get swabbed but We had all the symptoms, fever, sore throat, cough, I (don't even have CF) and I coughed up a couple mucus plugs.

Drink as much fluids as you can! Gatorade was our friend. Do you have someone to do manual CPT on you? Sometimes that can help focus on certain areas.

My daughter with CF ended up on Prednisone, cipro, Zyvox and TOBI...It took her a long time to get better..WE did treatments every 4 hours. Lots of rest, lots of probiotics, deep breathing exersizes. Chicken soup, eat anything you can tolerate...Motrin and Tylenol for fever.

Do not hesitate to call your CF doc if something doesn't feel right. I think I spoke with my daughter CF doc at least once a week , if not more when she was sick.
