My 25 yr old is sick with sinusitis and bronchitis- you know they are sick when they call and want to come home to mamma lol. We had received cayston but he hadnt started it yet so we decided to go ahead and do his first dose while he was here. He coughed so hard and could hardly finish it-said it was so harsh. He did albuterol first. Is this normal and does it get better? Should we have waited until he was feeling better from the sin and bronch? Thanks! Happy Thanksgiving.

I've been doing Cayston every other month for about 6 months now (3 on and 3 off). The first few days I start at the beginning of every month, I cough quite a bit during the treatment. I do albuterol, then Pulmozyme, then my airway clearance, then Cayston. Always do the antibiotic last so it stays in your lungs. I would try to get your son to just push through the coughing for a few more days and see if it gets better. I think the more he does it, the more he'll get used to it...unless he's coughing up blood- then stop. I'm a big fan of Cayston, as I've mentioned in another thread, I'm usually in the hospital every 3 months like clockwork. Since I started Cayston, it's been 5 months now and I'm still not hospitalized. I <3 Cayston!

I have been doing Cayston for 6/7 months, as well. (I have found my lung functions have improved since I started it & i haven't been in the hospital in 9 months & it's usually every 6 for me!) I have VERY sensitive lungs. I am unable to take Hypertonic & Pulmozyme because it will make my lungs bleed. But I have never found the Cayston to be "harsh." I cough a little when i first start each treatment though. I was told to always do Albuterol directly BEFORE the Cayston. As Aimee said the antibodic needs to be last to take affect.
The bronchitis might have had something to do with inability to deal with the drug. Maybe try it again when he is feeling better.
Happy Thanksgiving!

I'm really healthy and it makes me cough too. It's pretty harsh in my opinion. It took me a few days to where I could to a treatment without hacking.

I did not notice anything when I started Cayston. It is not harsh for me but neither is Tobi.. So I think everyone is different..... I always do albuterol before it and I DO notice if I do NOT do the albuterol before the cayston then my lungs feel kinda tight. I once skipped the albuterol for an afternoon treatment of cayston and I coughed after doing the cayston and lungs felt tight....

Good luck, I LOVE the Cayston. Working out well for me!

Thanks for the replys- he did do better with it with the subsequent doses. Hoping it was because he was already sick.
