Cepacia

I have Cepacia Multivorans (Genomovar 2) and first cultured it in June 2005. Since then I have probably done at least 8 sputum cultures and have cultured this Cepacia every time, usually at moderate levels, once only light levels.

However in my last sputum culture in January, when I gave a much bigger/better sputum sample than I usually manage to produce, i didn't culture it at all.

My questions are - firstly does anybody who has Cepacia ever not culture it? How long have you had cepacia and what type to you have (if you know)? When did you start culturing it and is it possible to actually get rid of it completely or should i expect it to show up again in a future culture?

I don't wanna get excited until I know a bit more about it.

the culture could have come from a part of the lungs where the cepacia isn't. Give it few more times without culturing it before getting excited.

i am extremely skeptical of bacteria, especially virulent bacteria, going away...

I don't know if they are the same thing or not, but I have a friend who cultured B. Cepacia in 2005. She hasn't cultured it for probably a year and a half now.

I haven't cultured it in 2 years. But I think it may be dormant, or like everyone else said, the mucus could have been from a different part of my lungs...although in 2 years I've had 4 different cultures. I don't know. I don't believe that you can get rid of cepacia ever. I have a theory that it can go dormant perhaps. I haven't had a cep flareup in ages-4 years probably.
My doc said there have been a few rare cases of ultra high (almost chemotherapy level) doses of Tobramycin Iv given that have eradicated cepacia. But she said to do something like that is a drastic last resort. The med alone at that level could kill you or do serious damage. I also know there is an article about this on the net b/c I researched alot about it a while back and read that documented info, but I dont' have that link anymore.

I first cultured cepacia when I was about 11... then didn't culture it again for several years... then it came up again. I agree that it can either lay dormant for a while or just the particular sputum sample you give might not have the bacteria in it.

i have psudomonus or however you spell that, always had it all i know, only was diagnosed two years ago and had it then and have it now but because its a bacteria and not a virus it is a living thing and can be killed, there is soo much of it that its not likely but it is possible, viruses can't be killed just forced to stay dormant and your body builds up antibodies to help prevent growth, thats why you only get chicken pox once but it can come back as shingles, and why you only get mono and things like that once and vaccines can be made for them, pretty sure on this but please correct me if i'm wrong, you can't offend me...
