Josh has been sick last Sunday, though now we are on the getting
better end of things. He started with a sinus headache on Sunday
that required his normal beds plus tylenol EX to sleep. He made it
to school Monday and Tuesday but by Wednesday was just too tired
and his head and chest hurt and his peak flows were in the low
yellow zone. His pediatrician wasn't in so he saw her colleague.
She was aware of his recent CF diagnosis so I am glad that his
doctor has the other three doctors in the practice up to par. After
calling the CF center at Hopkins (I had to suggest that because she
didn't know if she should continue the Bactrim they started and add
in another antibiotic), she started him on Omnicef for 14 days
(with a 14 day second round if necessary), and a five day burst of
60 mg of predisonne. Increased treatments to every four
hours, we did four times a day plus the pulmozyne once a day.Very
low grade fever.

Ok, I'll get to the topic.......he missed three days of school,
goes to a small catholic school. Six grade is already a rough year
and he has probably missed six whole days this year and some early
dismissals. He has ADHD so keeping up is important. For
accommodations so far we have an extra set of textbooks at home
(helps when he leaves them in school or is sick and assignments are
posted on the website). However he is now behind by 3 exams and
some homework that was never sent home). And I'm spending the
weekend trying to prepare him for these test. I felt liked I lived
at the school this week picking up what didn't get sent home.
I missed my class also, but did take him to my school
for an hour so I could take an exam. He is missing lessons and the
test can be given at home if there was someone to give them. My
sister is a speech pathologist and the other teachers in my family
say "he should be getting at home services when he is sick
like that do for children with asthma".. At home services are
"someone from the school district picks up his work from his
school and comes over and works with him for a bit during the three
days he is out sick. The county school district will provide
services to children in parachocial and catholic schools if they
fall under Title I, which his school does. He doesn't qualify for
home and hospital because he is not out for weeks at a time. I want
to pursue this but than the guilt comes in that I should just keep
him caught up on my own which was easier to do when he was younger
and in the primary grades. Last year he missed about 15 to 20 days
of school and usually 3 to 4 days at a time (it didn't include
sinus surgery).

SUGGESTIONS!!!!!!

My thought is that any help that is available - TAKE IT!

And do it without guilt; remember that sometimes one of the best things we can do as we care for others is to take care of ourselves (i.e. you be able to attend your classes, etc.)

I teach 6th grade at a small catholic school oddly enough. my first suggestion is to ask him about it. Some kids at that age do not want to feel different so maybe he would not want the extra help from someone he does not know.

Also, have you made his teacher(s) aware of the situation. Perhaps they could notify you a little early about tests so that he would be more prepared if he were sick or had to leave early. He should also be able to prepare for these tests more himself. You should not have to miss that much of your own time to get him caught up.

The most important thing is to teach him study skills. if he is able to learn good skills then it takes less time for you to be with him to study. If he is sick and doing more treatments that is a perfect time for him to study.

If he is ok with someone coming to help by all means take it. You have your hands full as it is. you shouldn't have to do everything.

And by no means feel that he has missed a lot of school. I have numerous kids that have missed much more than that and they do not even have a disease.

If your name was Debbie I would think you were at Josh's school.
His teacher's know about his illness and his ADHD. They have not
changed their response yet as they were waiting for a letter from
his doctor about the ADHD (just diagnosed last winter...is really
smart but works too quickly and makes silly mistakes. Diagnosis was
made by a psychologist using diagnostic test from mom, dad,
teacher). We have the letter from the doctor now and I have asked
for a meeting which I know the principal will grant; she is very
very good. I think the problem is one of organization, who is
responsible for what at school and how much help is appropriate.
For example, they told me last week that the math homework was in
the textbook, when really it was handouts that the teacher
had. Additionally, when he misses work, no one goes over it
with him. I think when he misses class just before a test,
having a study guide would be useful, ex. test was on Friday and he
missed Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. I will certainly asked how he
feels about having someone come in to help with school work.

Oh, I missed class because he was sick and had to stay at home.
Thursday is my long day at school, form 9 to 5, and a round trip of
4 hours sometimes. But I do get backed up in my homework. We
have a system for his homework but when he is sick....it seems to
disappear.

Kate, you are so right....I often loose sight of taking care of
myself.

Thanks for your help.

See that is my one problem with Catholic schools, the organization and the strictness. I also have an ADHD student who has gotten tested and we have all met and yet I am only allowed to do the bare minimum in allowing any changes in material or tests at all. Also, if any student misses school they are supposed to come up to me and ask for time to meet to go over what they missed. If they don't then tough for them. In my opinion I think that is way too strict. It seems like it is like that at your school also.

Also, organization is never good at Catholic schools and if you do want to get the additional help I would start working on it soon because for some reason it seems to take schools so so so long for things to get rolling.

Good luck!
