cf babies

I have a 8mth old son with cf. I was reading the messages on the side effects of the enzymes. He is taking viokase as a crushed tab in apple sauce. I'm really concerned about his teeth (only 2 teeth right now). I was at his cf clinic thurs & asked if he should be taking a different one because of his teeth. They said it would be fine. I'm supposed to check his mouth each time to make sure its all gone. Ha ha. You try checking the mouth of an 8 mth old. They said the little beads that are coated are too big for him to swallow even in apple sauce. Has anyone had any experience with enzymes & babies? Help.

See if your CF center has a sample of enzymes they could have you try with your son. Both of my kids started on the coated capsules from the time they were diagnosised. One was 3 weeks old and the other was 5 days old. They never had trouble swallowing the beads, just learning to eat off of a spoon at such an early age. I learned to put the spoon up to their lips and they basically sucked the enzymes and applesauce right off the spoon. Takes patience and practice but it can be done.

My baby is 5 months old and has been taking Ultrase (coated beads) since he was 3weks old. we have never had a problem with him taking them. I would ask around about the Viokase powder before using it. Some parents on the forum say it doesn't work. Good luck!

I've never heard that! We've been using creon since my daughter was 10 months old. We started with applesauce and now she swallows the whole pills.
