cross contamination is where one person with cf has a certain bacteria in their lungs and passes it on to another cf person who didnt have that bacteria...in other words if you dont have any certain bacterias in your lungs right now and you go to camp and meet kids with these bacterias you can catch it....and sometimes these bacterias can make you sicker, have more hospital stays....and some are bad enough that can make you really really sick. most of us cf people catch these bacteria anyway...like pseudomonas, but if you dont have it you dont want it for as long as possible...and there are other bacterias that we can get and arent as common that are really serious and can hurt the lungs alot more.

I just have psuedomonas...and sorry for writing my post like that I though you were younger lol..The other bacteria I was talking about is different strains of psuedomonas (some are resistant to antibotics), MRSA a very hard to treat staph infection and Cepcia also hard to treat....ANd these are easily spread from CF patient to CF patient even immune compromised people. So it is considered dangerous to have cf camps anymore...they do have them...but most if not all doctors are against the camps....yes alot of cfers can have these bacterias and be fine but some of them can get them and it damages the lungs very badly very fast...and certain strains of cepcia alot of transplant centers will not transplant a person with it because it is more of a risk and the person is more likely to die after transplant if they have that certain strain of cepcia...because it can get into the blood whtn the old lungs are removed and cause a blood infection...doctors believe if this happens the end result would be worse than if they hadnt tried a transplant...so in my rambling...its a huge gamble to take going to a cf camp...even though it would be fun and cool to meet others with cf....it can be dangerous to cfers

lol sorry i thought young people...actually...no..i didnt "thought" because i wasnt thinking <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0"><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-blush.gif" border="0">

I went to a camp in Charlottesville, VA. It's Camp Holiday Trails and as far as I know it's still in operation. It's not exclusively for CF, but for any kid with any kind of health or physical problem. I went for ten years and had a blast! I also worked there the year after I graduated from high school.

Let me know if you want more info. Justintime4.1@juno.com.

There were a lot of kids that came from farther away. Some came by train and some by plane. Someone from the camp is always available to pick out of town campers up at the station or airport. Just a thought.

There were other CF'ers, but I never heard of a case of cross-contamination there. I was usually the only CF'er in my bunk, so maybe that helped. I guess it just helped that all the campers didn't have CF. Plus, we spent the majority of the day outside and not couped up in small spaces where it's easier to catch germs from one another.

I wouldnt go back to a cf camp anyway....I went when I was 6 and they still had cf camps...it was fun....but now the risk of cross contamination is to scary...you can have fun doing something else...sure you can relate to other cfers but they may have a strain of a bug you dont have and that can be detrimental to your health....or how would you feel if you gave someone a bug they didnt have before and it hurt their health...to big of a deal for me...sure you can pick up pseudomonas anywhere....but there are different strains of it some are serious enough that are resistant to alot of meds....and what if someone goes who doesnt know they had cepecia?
