Hey everybody!

I was watching the previews for Queer Eye for the Straight Guy, its on tomarrow (tuesday) at 10PM and 2AM. The guy (Gary K. i think his name is) that they give a makeover is 40 years old, and has CF. He was told that he would never see his 16th birthday, and now turning 40. He has also had a double lung transplan! He is a dad, and im assuming lives around the NY City area. So if you want to watch, its on Bravo (channel 57 for me)

Thanks for letting us know. I just visited the Bravo web site and found this. Looks like Boomer is involved. I'm always happy to hear when CF is recognized. Looks like a good show (patient is from Long Island area).

<<Gary was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis as a child and his parents were told they shouldn't expect him to reach his sixteenth birthday. Well, happy to say that Gary has beaten that mark by twenty-four years as he is approaching his fortieth birthday! Not only is he beating the odds, he laughs at them since he is a double lung transplantee where the five year survival rate is 50% and he is going on his seventh year.

With all of the obstacles he has faced, Gary is a guy that is more than deserving of a day with the Fab Five to teach him the finer points of being a "metrosexual." Armed with Gary's good friend Boomer Esiason, the Fab Five's mission: throw a birthday block party for Gary. >>

I thought Queer Eye did a good job last night, did anyone else watch? Very uplifting.
Wouldn't it be a perfect world if all of us could get new lungs & be able to jog 5 miles like Gary did after his tx?

I watched Queer Eye last night, and thought it was a great episode. It showed the struggles that us CFers go through, but kept spirits high, and showed what great outcomes there could be. All of the Fab 5, as usual, kept the humor abundant, they were hilarious Gary was a great representative of us CFers too, hes so positive, much like most of the CFers i have met. I was happy with the episode overall, and his kitchen looked great!

what did other people think?

Coll and I watched and agree it was fantastic! Very moving...and a happy ending! I'm hoping it also results in Gary getting job offers.

I loved it!! It was by far my favorite representation of CF portrayed on mainstream TV. They described the disease and it's severity but they also focused on the other aspects of his life. His wife was amazing, his kids are great (it didn't mention if they were concieved naturally or with "help"), his parents and in-laws were supportive as well. They didn't show him doing his breathing treatments but they did show the massive amount of medicine he has to take. I was very moved when his wife talked about being pregnant with twins and how they gave him strength to fight CF long enough to get the double lung transplant. They didn't sugar coat the disease but they did emphasize how valuable life is and wonderful it can be. My favorite part was at the very end when Kyan? and the kids encoureged people to donate their organs. If you missed it the show will come on several more times this week.

Some people after transplant do take breathing treatments, but not the kind you take before...its a inhaled version of a anti rejection med...I havent heard of many doing this but I do know of a few. Its not common. Most after transplant if you do well you dont need breathing treatments at all. Once you have a transplant yes the cf is gone from the LUNG ONLY....but you still have to worry about getting sick and colds turning worse than colds because of the immune surpressant drugs. YOur body still has the cf gene, just not the new lungs.

I watched the beginning, but fell asleep before the end. One statement that Gary made that really hit me was when his wife was delivering the twins. He said he toted his O2 tank into the delivery room with him & the doctors noted that both the Mom & the Dad were using O2. I just mention this because its a clear cut visual (so to speak) for those not having an understanding of what he was going through before the tx. Even tho it didnt say if the kids were conceived naturally, I would even moreso since they had twins that they had help.

I really enjoyed this episode! Thanks to the original poster who told us about it. I had my Tivo set and watched it with my hub and parents. We all thought it was a good portrayal of CF. It was my first time seeing the show - those guys are hilarious. Gary seemed like such a great guy - and what a wonderful family too. It really does my heart good to see any CF patient celebrating their 40th birthday doing so well. Oh, and the kitchen rocked!

I agree with everyone, I loved the show and the portrayal of Gary and what CF is. They did a great job going into an explanation of the disease instead of just mentioning it. My Mother and Aunt were here to for the evening and I'm so glad they got to see it too. They had no idea that diabetes seems to come along with CF sometimes. And to see his medications, they had a little of a reality check.

THANKS to the original poster, because I have only seen that show once. I was glad to make a point to see it and the Fab 5 are so funny! I would tune in again. My husband was wishing he would have taped the show (no TIVO) so it's nice to know it will be on again!
