cf in infants - what does it look like?

My baby has been snuffleing, sneezing, and coughing most of her life. She is 4 months old. She has been tested for whooping cough and RSV, both were negative. I was looking at her family medical history and she has a first cousin who has CF. What are the symptoms in an infant? Thanks for the help. Marie

With a first cousin AND your concerns, I would INSIST on your doctor doing a sweat test. Your baby could show NO symptoms of CF and still have it.

To answer your question: Does your baby taste salty? - Give her a lick! A salty taste is a symptom. Since many people with CF also have digestive problems, does your baby seem collicky (perhaps from a stomach ache) or gassy. What about a bloated belly (flat in the morning, yet looking quite distended once the first meal/bottle has been given). Abnormal stools are a strong sign (although might be difficult for you to determine since your baby hasn't started solid foods). Frequent, runny, foul smelling stools are a symptom of CF. My son had "leakers" on a daily basis (so loose and bulky that the stools ran out of his diaper). I thought that was typical baby behavior, but after having my daughter I've learned different.

My daughter's symptoms of cf as an infant was failure to thrive (did not gain weight appropriately), very hungry, and lots of stools.
Since your daughter has a first cousin with cf, I would get her tested. Some of my neices and nephews were tested after my daughter's diagnosis when she was five weeks old. My nephew who was four at the time had a positive sweat test, so he also has cf.
