CF & Sexual Performance? (NSFW)

(Just for reference, I've had CF my whole life; I wasn't diagnosed until I was 5, but I have lived with it since I was born... I am not new to the disease nor its effects -- there's just some things I don't know about because I don't see many people discussing it or it just seems to be something that never comes up in conversation.)

Excuse me if this post isn't suitable for this forum or if anything I post about seems too graphic or intimate...

I have had little contact with other people with CF outside of one person (she died early this year, unfortunately), so I'm unsure of what's exactly common or even standard in regards to CF and sex. I know that infertility is very high among males, and that females have just as hard a time getting pregnant naturally. I know that, in males, the vas deferens is often absent or atrophied and orgasm can be affected by this...

I know that there are many types of CF and different ways that things work for different people. I know that different strains can cause different results (some die as children, some don't even show symptoms until puberty, etc). I just don't know enough about how universal the sexual side is...

I've researched it and it seems that I have all the hallmarks of sexual dysfunction in regards to CF. But I have questions related to these things that are very personal, but first I'd like to list my own personal details:
  • I have one fully formed testicle. The other testicle never grew beyond when I was born... it has remained the size of a pea my whole life.
  • I'm have no concrete evidence that my vas deferens is either completely absent or is just obstructed either by mucus or by premature deformity (I was born three months premature).
  • My ejaculate has been consistent my whole life since I began puberty. It is of very little volume (I have never measured it, so I can't say how much I ejaculate regularly, but I usually have to wait a considerable amount of time before I can produce anything somewhat regular [i.e. 3 or 4 weeks of abstinence]), and it has a slight milky look to it but it is very watery and doesn't hold any sort of substantial substance (it is basically slightly milky water).
  • From researching, I think my seminal vesicles are the only working parts... I think my prostate doesn't really do much in the way of ejaculation. I don't have anything substantial in terms of volume, body, or amount.

With all that being said, is there any possible way that a mature male with CF can improve his sexual performance? I've read tons of guides for men on how to change the consistency, volume and even taste of their semen -- but these are all for normal males and I have never really produced anything close to the common standards in terms of ejaculate.

Does sperm really make a huge impact? Do other men with CF have the same problems as me? Have they ever been able to make these symptoms better or is it just something I have to live with? What other males have similar or dissimilar experiences? How different is the performance between strain combinations? Do those who are relatively more healthy in regards to their disease produce more semen, or is it just dependent on circumstances?

Again, I hope this subject isn't questionable or against the rules. I know that this is very personal, but I was hoping I'd be able to get some answers or at least different perspectives from those with cystic fibrosis or from those who are either partnered with a CF-er or know one intimately regardless.

I think a lower volume is pretty normal for us, and almost clear as well. I'm not sure why you'd want a bigger load, there's less mess the way we have it. 98% of CF men don't ejaculate sperm. Not sure what's going on with the ball, that may be unique to you. And no performance issues here either.
Cam, I know it's off topic, but please learn how to write. It's really hard to read your post.

CAM, hi am woman and I wld like to comment on 2 things, first of all there are a lot of men out there with only one testicle. second why are you concerned abt the amount of semen you give out, unless you are ejaculating too soon. That cld be not so great. I say stop worrying abt this issues. Yes, you are probably infertile as most CF men are. But you still have to practice safe sex. There are still STD that are bad and you have forever like herpes that is like carrying around luggage forever . And of course we are still living in the age of AIDS. I always said it's not the size of the ship, but the motion in the ocean. One thing you did not mention is the sexual experience good for you, or are you left un satisfied? If you are then really don't worry abt anything else. Relax and enjoy. Pat/CF

A healthy male produces almost unlimited semen, one ejaculation after another and so on, within limits. This points at a significant constriction or limited ability to make seminal fluid, possibly both. The ejaculate in our healthy male has some force or pressure behind it shooting vertically over a foot in height, an established advantage in impregnation. A weak semen stream will do the same job but when fatherhood is intended, this could be suspect. The white streaks in the seminal fluid hold sperm in most all cases but our healthy seminal fluid is white with a hint of clear streaks. The difference is again a consideration when planning for children. In CF, all mucus and bodily fluids are thickened by salt. Our sweat is very salty as are our tears and the clear seminal fluid that carries our sperm cells can be so salty, it impedes the sperm trying to swim. Thick seminal fluid is easily overlooked by fertility doctors as the pH change from the high salt effects the sperm. It also answers your question of taste.

As for how your body functions sexually, nothing related to your semen is going to be noticed in love making. There are surgical procedures for improving your plumbing. Just as a vascectomy is reversible, the improvement would give you the ability to enjoy sex on a more frequent basis. Of all your complaints, a week to recharge is one I'd want to address.

I'm pleased to say I am unfamiliar with over the counter cures for improving sexual potency. Have your serum testosterone level checked and monitor your blood pressure because both impacts our sexual quality. CF is hard on all stress hormones and testosterone burnout can hit surprisingly young. I advocate men with CF keep their T levels at the upper limit for as long as possible.

Whatever you have in mind I would consider having corrective procedures now to open tubes and ducts if for no other reason than to avoid problems when you're much older. Don't discount the prostate in all of this. Chronic prostatitis, or frequent prostate infections are common with CF. That can be hell to live with and the source of your semen dysfunction. The prostate acts like a gas pump. Depending upon the choice of fluid or fluids, certain valves close and others open to exit a common line. For all this, a urologist can help determine what's going on and based on that knowledge you can make decisions. The issue bothers you and information will help with that decision. For my money I'd seriously consider any corrective actions sooner than later. We are sexual beings by nature, it is important to feel sexually adequate.

Volume is quite dependant on the individual and CF is only part of the story. Lots of healthy males with very low volume (What we see in p0rn is misleading and not exactly average) and CF'ers with good volume.

Lots of things affect it for me.:
Hydration.
Feeling sick. Feeling less then decent both mentally and physically for me has a big effect on libido, testosterone, volume and time to recharge.
Exercise, good nutrition and enough rest increases my libido a lot.
(Session of barbell squats and once I'm back among the living my libido is through the roof.)

Over the counter testosterone boosters that are not actual prohormones/anabolic steroids are ineffective in that regard and a waste of money.
That said something like ZMa might be worth a try but the effect is quite minute.

Volume ultimately doesn't matter for sexual performance ofcourse but feeling as good and being in as good of a shape as you can be does.
It's a topic often overlooked by our regular CF team anyway and only person ever vaguely asking me about it was an internist and those are not even standard in the CF team here.
If worried or bothered to the extent that it affects your well being (we have enough insecurities to fight past already) make an appointment with an urologist and maybe an endocrinologist to see if a significant improvement can be found.
