Truly a modern day miracle delivered to the largest CF community. Hopefully this gets through the FDA/Government agencies/insurance providers in a timely manner. Hats off to the CF Foundation and Vertex.
Seems like most people fail to realize that this type of treatment basically plugs the hole in the dam as opposed to trying to mop up mess.
Maybe it is too early to say, but it feels like this is the beginning of the end of severe cases of CF. I suspect that this is the tip of the iceburg of cellular level treatments.
Also, since the Ivacaftor usage population will increase by 22,000 maybe the burden of the drug/research costs will be shared and brought down below stratospheric levels. Hopefully a reasonable balance can be struck that allows Vertex to be rewarded for amazing breakthroughs in a timely manner without denying any patients of treatment.
