As I mentioned in a previous post, when Kaitlyn was in the hospital last week they said they thought she had CFRD. They wouldn't say positively because she was on Prednisone and they knew that was having an effect on her blood sugar, but they were pretty sure that wasn't all there was to it. We have been out of the hospital for 1 week today and have been checking her blood sugar 4 times daily. We go back to the dr on Monday to decide what to do as far as insulin goes. As of now she has not had any.
Now, my question is what is normal? .... while in the hospital on 40 mgs of Prednisone daily, her blood sugar was rarely under 300. The only time it was ever normal was first thing in the morning. Since getting out of the hospital it has been much lower, but still a tad high. Early in the mornings it runs around 90, then at other times during the day it fluctuates between 130-160. Occasionally if she has a snack less than 2 hours before we take it, it will still run in the 250 range, but that's the exception now rather than the rule. She is still on Prednisone but only 20 mgs a day now. As of tomorrow it will reduce to 20 mg every other day for 5 days then we will be done with it. I can definately see a difference, but it still isn't completely normal.
At what point do they normally start insulin? Will they give her insulin if it's running around 140 all the time? I am completely new to the whole diabetes thing and am very nervous about it. I really hate the idea of her having to have more shots every day. We're already sticking her 4 times a day to check the sugar and also giving her growth hormone injections daily... and of course all the treatments... it is just so overwhelming. I am just wondering what to expect when we see the dr...
Thanks in advance for any info.
