Chest Pain

Hi, My 3 yr old (CF) woke up yesterday with a cold which has gotten much worse today. This is only her 2nd bad cold and the 1st one was about 2 years ago. The chest therapy worked great this morning but she had to do a lot of coughing to get it all out. She doesn't know how to spit it out yet so she ended up throwing up all over me. I think that is because she had swallowed so much mucus that it must have upset her stomach (just guessing). It started as a sinus cold and has slowly worked its way down to her chest.Anyway, when she coughs she says it really hurts her chest (lungs). Is this normal that she has chest pain from coughing? Should I mention it to the dr's? Does anyone have any tricks for easing her pain. Thanks,Heather

hi im a cf adult i have chest pain all the time its caused from imflammation in the lungs though her chest pain is probably not serious as long as there is no blood involved in her sputum. sometimes chest pain can be from trapped air in the lungs called pneumothorax which means trapped air where the lungs kinda rub against the chest wall. the wall in the sac in which the lungs are stored but in my opinion it really nothing to worry about.but still tell the doctor.to ease the pain put a heating pad on it.

Give her a big fluffy stuffed animal or pillow to hug while she coughs. It will help soften the blow of her coughing. I have a big bunny I still use when I get sore. It is very normal, they may put her on a steroid inhaler to help with inflamation. Advair is a good one b/c it is an inhaled powder and works well for kids who have trouble with the aresol kind.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">Debbie22 yr old w/ CF

Pulmozyme (or drugs like it) which is an inhaled mist that thins the mucous, is a super thing for clearing the lungs as well as percussion. I kick myself every day, for not getting my son a percussion vest sooner. It's SO much more efficient then the old manual "beating". (patty pat we called it )Unfortunately the vomiting was probably cause by the mucous and the "gag" reflex, having swolled much of it didnt help any I'm sure. My son vomits all of the time, even with treatment. He has a very sensative gag reflex, and amazingly enough (as if anyone should have to get used to vomiting) it doesnt bother him anymore.MatsMom

I remember when I was sick and just generally achy that when I coughed it seemed to hurt worse than ever. If I coughed to much or too long my lungs would just get tired and it really hurt to cough anymore after I'd strained them like that. I found what I really enjoyed is massage. It doesn't have to be professionally, though I liked those too. What I REALLY enjoyed was laying on my stomach while a family member just rubbed my ribcage. Lightly, and around my back, it made me feel a lot better. I found as I got older and aromatherapy became more active in stores that the "stress relaxation" bath salts added to a hot/warm bath really, really helped any aches and pains I had. Add those too together and it helped take a lot of the strain away. It will not get rid of the lungs aching, but it will make the body feel better which is usually 50% of the problem right there. Also, for the upset stomach, I had that frequently, I'd wake up and just want to toss my cookies because my stomach was so upset (I'd swallow crap I'd cough up while sleeping). Especially since the doctors said eat eat eat and that breakfast is one of the most important meals of the day. Eventually I just stopped eating breakfast which really helped. Well I hope this information helps. It's just my take on what I went through. I hope she feels better soon.~Candice17 w/CF & DB-Lung Tx
