chest pt

Can I ask all of u who have toddlers how u do pt? Like do you do it
with the child laying down or sitting up, and does it make a
difference? Does it wear out your arm too? Do u do all sections
each time? I had a respiratory specialist at the clinic tell me
once that I could kind of just follow him around on the floor
while he's playing and do it, but that didn't seem to work so well.
She showed me this thing where she kind of squeezed her hands
around his chest and vibrated her hands (shook lightly) while he
was exhaling. Although he didn't mind it, I've never tried it
because I don't think I'd do it right.
Anyway, just thought I'd see how all of u do it.

Hi Amber

Our daughter is 2 1/2 and even though we do physio, she is really
active, which also definitely helps. The physio told us to
encourage her to be as active as possible - like we have to try
with a 2 1/2 year old! Active is an understatement. We also
make sure she gets out of breath at least once a day.
Exercise is the best thing. We just to physio with her
hands, back, sides, chest, etc, and also bounces.

Good luck.

When my daughter was small I would lay her on my lap with her head
toward the floor. The PT nurse said gravity helps to pull
everything loose that way. Cupping your hands makes better force
with less work so your arms don't give out as quick. We always
called them Love Pats and would let Crystal watch her favorite
cartoon while getting it done. She got the vest when she was 11 and
that was an amazing invention. Worked a lot better to get
everything up!

Hope this helps
We were given a handout from the RTs at the hospital that showed the different positions, etc. DS usually lays lengthwise across our legs -- facing our feet, with his head on a pillow. We do upper chest, mid chest, armpits, upper back, lower back -- about 3-4 minutes per position. He usually watches tv or dvds while we beat him. One of us holds the nebulizer at the same time so we can use both hands at the same time. If one of us is at a meeting, then it's one handed -- one hand hold the nebulizer, the other one does the beating. When he was younger we'd sing silly songs to keep him occuppied, now he watches his shows. L

I do manual cpt on both my boys, five minutes per spot (more if they are sick or feeling yucky). I sit on the sofa with one boy lying across my legs, I do thier fronts am, backs afternoons and their sides on an evening, normally with them watching t v or listening to music. We also do vibrations after each spot and then they do thier pep after each treatment. The physio used to bother my hands and elbows quite a bit, I had to have a cortisone shot in my elbow because of it! Its very rare that it bugs me anymore.

Do you always do DS neb while doing physio? The boys Dr told me that we were not to do it until after their physio. The reason being the physio helps unclog the airways of mucuos so more meds get into the lungs? My boys take about an hour and half worth of nebs each, it would be so much easier if they could take them during physio!
Does anybody else do their nebs while getting physio?
Thanks

Sounds like I'm doing it just fine. Thanks for the
insight!
Also, what are "bounces" and "vibrations"

The nebs -- specificially the bronchiodialators -- albuterol and atrovent open up the airways. So we neb and beat at the same time to get the stuff up and out. Nebs and beating both take about 20 minutes. Sometimes if I'm by myself and I start the treatment a little earlier or if ds is coloring or snacking, I'll neb him to open up the airways and THEN do CPT so I'm not struggling to hold the neb cup and beat him.

Also we were told we need to do CPT 3-4 times a day. 2 is an absolute minimum. We do CPT 3 times a day -- 6 a.m. 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. and if ds isn't feeling well we throw in an extra treatment or 2.

We don't do tobi or pulmozyme during CPT. liza

Thanks for rresponding to my post. It made a lot of sense......, my boys take Ventolin and Advair through a Aero Chamber, before cpt. They take their tobra and pulmozyme through neb, after cpt treatments.

DH and I were talking about nebs last night -- studies whether bronchiodialators are really worthwhile. Some clinics opting for inhalers instead. At this point our doctor is still having us do nebs.

I did find that when we switched from a Pari proneb plus compressor to a devilbiss Pulmoaid that tobi times decreased significantly 40-45 minutes down to 23 minutes. Pulmozyme takes about 5 minutes. When on Tobi we do that at the 6 a.m. and 5 p.m. treatment time. Pulmozyme is done at the late night one. L
