Chicken Pox Exposure

I have already had the chicken pox (when I was 19 years old). I had them bad!! So I am immune.

My son has had the first chicken pox vaccine... has not had the follow up booster. He best buddy has been exposed to them... will get them very shortly.

Here is my question(s): Do I need to be concerned being exposed to chicken pox since I had them as an early adult??? I know I can't get them again<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> but do I need to be concerned about shingles??

I have heard/read that shingles in not fun either. My immune system is not the greatest-- fighting a cold/cough. Should I take extra precautions??

**I am going to do some research to see if my son can still get the "pox" if he hasn't had the follow up vaccine. Yikes!!!

I'm not too sure that you can never get the chicken pox again, I think that it is possible.
Wee Craig had them when he was 2 and a half, he was neither up nor down about them, we were obviously concerned about his risk but his CF doc said that the injection is only of use if administered before the breakout of spots ( its in my blog somewhere, i'll need to check).

I also got the pox at the same time, I was nearly 40 at the time, and I swear I thought I was going to die ( but then thats a typical over reaction by the male of the species).

I don't think you have to worry. If you had the pox that late you won't get them again most likely. Also, you can't get shingles from someone who has chicken pox, even though it is the same virus. I have had shingles and you are right, they are not fun. But it didn't affect my CF at all, it was just a painful experience.

Hi Carrie,
Andrew was vaccinated when he was a baby, but did not recieve a booster. (I didn't even realize they were giving boosters, to be honest with you! Our ped never mentioned it.) Anyway, he had chicken pox two years ago at age 9. Thanks to the vaccination it was a lighter case and did not cause him too much discomfort. So, yes, your kiddo could come down with it, but it wouldn't be a huge deal. And I would think you could come down with it again, too, but I would think since you had it once yours, too, would be a mild case.
Good luck! I hope you're both "in the clear"!
