Hello i was wondering if anyone else has experienced this. for the past 5 days or so Ashton has had his countinual cough he seems ok most of the day coughing and choking occasionally. but when you lay him down at night he coughs and chokes really bad.. sometimes he can sleep though it sometimes not.. He has been on augmentin for almost 2 weeks now and just started his TOBI cycle yesterday.. im hopeing that helps it get better even though his culture didnt show anything.. im just wondering if something else could be going on.. sometimes he feels a little rattly in his lungs when im doing treatments but i havent listened to him yet to verify that..

christi-when my son was little he would cough and gag over and over until he would vomit. This was horrible but after he would at least be able to breathe better. I tried doing extra breathing treatments but it only made him hyper and cranky. I raised the head part of the mattress in his baby bed using somewhat flat pillows and a small blanket until I found the level that worked. I also put vick's vapo rub on his chest-the greaseless cream kind worked good. I would give it about 20 minutes to see if it worked. If not I would give him children's sudafed and delsym cough med. only at night. It usually only took a couple of nights for him to get over this. The tobi makes him cough more than usual for about the first 2weeks and I think-all this was still in there? If you do the chest p.t. maybe try focusing on the area that sounds rattley a few minutes more. Believe it or not we would make him laugh by tickling him. He has always tried to supress his coughs. This worked when he was little and now my husband "wrestles" with him to get him warmed up( he still tickles him too!)
I hope telling you what I've done helps! About the augmenton-when my son wouldn't respond to that his dr. put him on cipro. Just a thought.
Good luck.

Is it possible this is just plain-ol' drainage? Katy had something similar to what you describe, right after her dx, and I freaked out. Turns out it was kind of an allergy/sinus issue and was VERY well treated with Zyrtec. Sudafed and Benadryl have never worked well for her.

Just a thought. Take care -

I am going to put a few ideas out there and see if they are something you have thought of or addressed already.

One is it possible he is suffering from acid reflux? I know for me I was just put on Nexium for reflux problems. My issues were brought out by antibiotic use. I had shortness of breath and constant nagging cough, along with some mild chest discomfort and occasional/positional wheezing.

Maybe if he is NOT already on something for this you could ask his doc if there is a way to see if he has reflux problems.

Also is it possible he is suffering from seasonal allergies? Allergies might cause excess drainage which could kick start the coughing - it would also appear to be worse when he was laying down to sleep because the drainage would be pooling in the back of his throat.

I hope that you are able to figure out what the problem is and I also hope that it does get better with the TOBI. If not I hope the docs are able to help you figure something out.

Take Care,
Lindsey
