My daughter cultured psuedomonas for the first time. She does not swallow pills. I tried putting the liquid Cipro in her feeding tube. Not a good idea. I can't get her tube unclogged. Is there a trick someone can share with me?

My son just takes the liquid Cipro by mouth. I just squirt it in with a syringe. I stand in front of him and hold his chin, tilt his head just a bit and squirt it in his mouth in one quick motion as carefully as I can. Of course his dosage was upped the last time so I had to do that twice because the dose is too much to do in one squirt now. Those beady things get on the skin and its hard to wipe it off, annoying! lol I always have a drink for him to kinda wash it down afterwards and wet washcloth for any that gets on his face. He doesn't really act like the taste really bothers him, he just takes it. Does she say it tastes bad and won't take it like this? I'm curious along with you to see if maybe someone has a trick..best way I found for liquid medicine with my son is a syringe and to just do a quick motion get it over with fast, been doing it that way for awhile and he just takes whatever I give him. Sorry to hear she cultured Pseudomonas, my son has a few times as well...I hope the Cipro will do it's job well for her! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0"> God bless!

Hi there

Cipro is a nitemare down tubes, it's the grains in the liquid.

To unblock the tube, put about 30 ml of warm water in a 60cc syringe and fix it to the tube and use the syringe like you would a toilet plunger. It may take a while but keep going. You may need to draw back on the syringe to remove some of the blockage.

After a good 5 mins of this, give the tube a good flush applying abit of pressure and it should go. You can use fizzy water as this helps break up the blockage too.

If left too long the medicine can dry up and harden and then you may need a hospital visit so they can put their special rods in to shift it.

To prevent cipro doing this again, ensure you give a really good flush before, shake the bottle for at least a minute before drawing it up and then give immediately. If you are still anxious about this you could just give a small amount, flush, abit more flush etc

Ensure you give a really good flush afterwards. Via the tube is the only way we can give Sophie her meds and she was on cipro for a long time and this way worked for us.

Good luck and hope you get/got the blockage shifted.

xx

Okay, so my dr said it was okay to dilute to put down the feeding tube...whether or not this is REALLY okay I am not sure....

We would fill a syringe with the amount called for on the prescription then add water to fill the rest of the syringe. Then put down the tube. Then flush several times with water. This is what we did....
