Clarification about taking ADEK's or similar

I am wondering; We don't absorb fats or fat soluble vitamins A D E and K. What I want to know is if we take a vitamin supplement, such as ADEK's or each vitamin separately, will we absorb them WITHOUT an enzyme?

ADEK's has recently been discontinued, as well as the enzyme I USED to take. I am wondering if I buy the vitamins at a health food store, do I need the enzyme to absorb them.

Yes. The ADEK's or Source CF are vitamins made especially for CF patients so that they are better absorbed. If you take OTC vitamins then it is advisable to take enzymes with them so that they will be absorbed easier. Without, then they are absorbed about the same as the vitamin found naturally in your food, which isn't much, being the reason CF'ers need supplements.

When my girls' dietician insisted that the ADEK's be chewed not swallowed, (my girls refused to chew them because they thought they tasted gross)we were told they could take OTC vitamins 2/day if they took enzymes with them. They did this for a number of years until we were told about Source CF vitamins. We order them over the phone directly from the manufacturer. When you order 3 or more bottles, shipping is free. Currently Anna' only takes One a Day Women's (or generic of that same type because it has more calcium) since she is post transplant and has to take enzymes with one of her anti-rejection meds to maintain her levels. She's not had any problems with her vitamin levels in 4 yrs. Rachel takes Source CF and only has issues with her Vit. D levels. We think due to Nebraska winters. Summer time when she returns home she has no issues. Same with Anna' pre-tx.

Good question! I give the liquid vitamins w enzymes to my twin boys. My daughter takes a chewable vitamin w/o enzymes. I just recently stopped giving my daughter a enzyme with her vitamins. Last time we were in the hospital the nurse practitioner said I don't have to give enzymes with the vitamin. I give it to the boys because they are much more pancreatic insufficient

My son used to take the ADEK, now he takes aquadek which I order on line. I just google "aquadek free shipping" and see who has it in stock for me. I think aquadek is the same as the old adek, I think they just supposedly "improved" it somehow. We were just told at our last nutrition appointment to make sure he was taking his ADEK vitamins with food so he would be taking enzymes at the same time, as the ADEK are fat soluble vitamins.

Thank you all for your prompt responses. I continue to have challenges with getting the proper vitamins and enzymes. It seems when I finally find something that works, it is discontinued I found Source CF Vitamins and am doing some research on the REFORMULATION of the products. I'm also researching Aquadek. I am always concerned about what is ACTUALLY in each vitamin, enzyme etc and have found some to be NOT WHAT THEY CLAIM. I will be sure to post my findings.

Nebraska winters....brutal! Vitamin D from the sun is absolutely necessary!

Hi - we take AquADEK's - which is meant for cf patients and the vitamins don't need fat to be absorbed.
Try

AquADEK's sounds like what I'm looking for. I do not want to take a vitamin I have to take another pill to make work My biggest challenge through my life is taking medication....especially pills. I'll save you my life story, but I was only 12 when I decided pills where more of a pain then a help. At this point my concern is my vitamin levels. When I'm in the sun everyday, I have absolutely no issues. But fall, winter and even spring...I have trouble with my vitamin levels. Thanks for everyones input. If you have other ideas, let me know.
